To DU MJ fans, from someone who wasn't
Whatever else he was, I believe MJ wanted to do good in this world. And that that impulse came from a well of deep sadness and sensitivity.

13. I've been completely out of touch with it all since 1984 or so
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 06:59 PM by EFerrari
when my boys decided they wanted to sing and dance at 8 and 5 because they had access to his music.

Maybe no one who didn't live that can understand.

Thanks again.

6. Yes, he meant a great deal to a great many
and I respect that. I hadn't quite realized how profoundly he touched so many people until the last few days.

You are talking about Michael Jordan right?

14. Many, many, many.
Think what you will about any person, but a person who's remembered fondly by perhaps half the population of the planet is worthy of recognition.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

17. Probably no one gets this but, I didn't have any daughters.
Two boys. Both of them are now working musicians. Both of them cut their teeth on Michael Jackson as he was daring the world to respond to him.

Maybe one or both of my guys would have been fine in some other line of work. But, as it happened, both of them went for it -- even when they were very young and when singing and dancing were "girly" things that boys didn't do.

For opening that one little window for my boys, I will always honor Michael.

Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 07:24 PM by parasim
They were both weaned on Michael Jackson's music and both are now very accomplished musicians. Both of them called me the day he died and we mourned together.

RIP, Mike.

In those days, boys didn't do that. Well, Jackson changed that. He gave our boys another option.

To our boys. :toast:

20. Thanks from a life-long MJ fan.
and I say "life-long" because I'm about 9 months older than him and when I first watched the Jackson 5 on the Ed Sullivan show, I decided at that time I wanted to be a dancer. Although my own dance career never took off, I've followed his career ever since. With my oldest sister, it was the Beatles, the Monkeys for my other sister and for me it was the Jackson 5.

I closely followed his career because every time he'd come out with a new album, it was exactly where I was musically. With J5 it was Soul and R&B, with Off The Wall it was Disco, with Thriller it was Rock, with Bad there was early hip-hop, with Dangerous came New Jack Swing. Not that he invented any of these genres, of course, but he sure did do them all very well.

He also introduced me to some of my favorite artists, including The Tempations, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, etc.

Throughout the years, I also became quite aware of his philanthropy (such as the Guiness Book of Records for most charities given to by a pop artist, 300 million or so dollars donated to charities, Heal the World Foundation, etc).

It wasn't until the late 80's that I started to not identify with him quite as much and although kept up on his musical career, I was chagrined by the court cases, hyperbaric chamber antics, Peter Pan complex, plastic sugery and all, but then again, I never had the childhood that he had, so how could I possibly relate?

Anyway, thanks for your sentiment. :)

a concert of his, never bought any of his music, but I DID enjoy it nonetheless.

He was an enigma. We will never know the full truth about him. All we have to judge him by is what artistic and humanitarian legacy we know for a fact that he left........

40. i grew up with MJ...he's just a few months older than me
someone else posted today about what the jackson 5 meant to little black kids...they were the first black pre-teen, teen idols. like the other poster, MJ was also my first crush. he and his brothers were such a big part of my childhood, so i was sad when he died. it was like losing a cousin, perhaps one you hadn't seen in years, but someone you have fond memories of...and someone who had always been a part of your life. and of course for me, and i am sure many others, MJ's passing is reminder of my own mortality.
