Maine (U.S. District) judge plans to assume senior status

PORTLAND, Maine—U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby says he plans to assume senior status this spring, creating an opening on the federal bench in Maine.

Hornby, who's 65, plans to transition from active status. He says the change becomes effective on April 30 -- 20 years after he became a federal judge.

Hornby told the Portland Press Herald that he gave early notice of his plans to provide plenty of time for the selection of a successor. He also says he has no intention of retiring, or even scaling back his caseload. Senior judges can continue to serve as long as they are willing and able.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, will be responsible for forming a selection committee and submitting a nominee's name to President Barack Obama.
