Do you disapprove of irresponsible people, or just those who are financial failures? |
|
I get really tired of reading posts from people who claim people who default or get foreclosed on are criminals, thieves, deadbeats, etc.
It seems to me often what people are really saying is, 'shame on them for being financial failures!' and not "shame on them for borrowing irresponsibly" since those who borrowed in a manner which was identically irresponsible and yet somehow manage to stay current, escape criticism.
Seems awfully self-righteous. And don't you EVER come to me looking for sympathy if you ever go through something similar. Though knowing what a liberal I am, I would probably sympathize with you anyway.

1. People make mistakes and people have things happen that are beyond their |
|
control. That's why we need a system to help people who fall on hard times.
And then there are a small few who game the system.

11. "And then there are a small few who game the system" |
|
It amazes me that many of our less enlightened brothers and sisters point to the cheats and use them to justify doing nothing for those who are truly in need.
A couple of weeks ago I was having lunch with some of my coworkers and one of them mentioned some of the homeless people that shelter near our office. A second coworker (who had always appeared to be a bright and decent fellow) sneered "don't you think most of them just want to be homeless?" That one statement totally changed my opinion of the guy.
He's relatively young. Born in the late 70's. Never knew a president before Reagan. Maybe it is because I was born in a more idealistic time. I never knew a president before Kennedy. The lack of compassion really sickens me though. These nuts never see that they might get into a position where they run out of options.
I thank the politicians who voted for free and reduced lunch for impoverished children. It really helped my family out and I always had a good meal at school. I thank them for the Pell grants. I couldn't have gone to college without them.
These people bitch and gripe about the UNDESERVING POOR getting something they haven't worked for but they don't say a damned word about the CORPORATE THIEVES that have stolen more than we can imagine. I guess its okay because those guys worked for it and they are SUCCESSFUL.
I have grown so weary.
End of Rant.

who are financial failures.
So it does seem to be the scary poor loser thingy that gets to them the most.

6. Good point! I didn't think of it that way, but you are absolutely right. |
|
They rationalize their hatred of losing by saying, 'see, you lost, therefore you were irresponsible, and that is why I hate you, not because you lost'.

Specifically referring to Americans
We are witnessing the devastation of 30 years of being indoctrinated with the belief that living on credit was the only way to live. -Use the equity in your home like a bank -Buy gas guzzling vehicles -Buy houses that are so fucking big that two or three families could live in them...when there is only two people. - Fill in the blanks....
Corporate Banks and other Financial Institutions with stockholders fucked this country over during the last 15 years. I can't help think that if we had more local banks and Credit Unions many of the individuals that made bad financial decisons may have been shown that they were making bad decisions.

8. Presumably nobody gets up |

in the morning and says: "I'm going to fuck up my life."
In the end people do what they think will work and in some cases rely on the advice of others.

13. What people so easily forget |
|
Is that many of the people who got screwed are people who acted on the ADVICE of the banks and financial advisers, who had a duty to at least be honest, if not look out for the interests of their client. In legal terms, this is called a "fiduciary duty"; a fancy term for the fact an adviser has to be looking for for the client, and at the very least be HONEST, and give Honest advice. These bankers were NOT even Honest, to say nothing of not being loyal. But of course, out come the holier than thou types, most of whom would be easy pickings for the same con game, because their poor ability to research reveals themselves in their words!
Let's be honest here though, this country was in part founded by the idea that people who are poor did something to deserve it; that somehow being poor is the result of some sin or lack of wits. However, what is sad is that the very people who are supposed to be fighting this side of America are in many cases, the very people who have bought that same line hook, line and sinker.
