New law...not sure if it is national but in our state we have a new law that I think is subjective
we are to only drive on the right lane of a divided highway

passing on the Left is permissable but then we are to get back in the right hand lane

if we are in the left too long we will get ticketed

so

who decides if we are in the left too long?

I think it is very subjective

1. Traveling in the left lane, unless actually in the process of passing,is
a ticketable offense in many states.

2. I always knew not to continually drive in the left lane
but my issue is

deciding how long is too long?

the cop who has had a bad day and decides to have fun?

the cop who doesn't see the dude in the right hand lane speed up and slow down to mess with the driver trying to get over?

there are too many variables

4. Left lane passing only
Loved driving in Germany as they enforced the laws and driving was a pleasure.

6. Except in Boston, where you're likely to get passed on the right
Oh, and don't even think about using the breakdown lane for actual breakdowns; that's a passing lane during rush hour.

11. Aaaahh,another Rt 128/95 fan. That little driving aberration
usually confounds most out-of-staters.

15. Massachusetts Has The Lowest Auto Death Rate In The US
Driving here takes a little getting used to, but we're reasonably safe.

3. With some exceptions, that has been the law in NY for as long as I can remember.

5. I don't believe that is new because the left lane on a divided
highway was described as a "passing lane" in the driver ed book I studied in Washington State in the late 1960s. There were exceptions such as on mountain passes where the right lane is labelled for trucks and other slow-moving vehicles.

You were only to remain in the passing lane until you could safely pull in front of the vehicle you had passed.

7. It's an old law in a lot of places but with the number of trucks on the road
filling up the slow lane, it's impracticable today. I doubt if the cops will be too gung ho about enforcement.

13. They announced a law like this in Illinois maybe 5 years ago.
And it made a good deal of news coverage.

Since then I have never heard of anybody being ticketed.

16. It's a law simply to protect the self-appointed "traffic cops" who impede traffic.
Sooner or later, some lead-footed conservative, family values, second amendment practicing moran is going to shoot at them (and I don't blame them one bit).
