Recommend this thread if you agree that Rush Limbaugh should be thrown off Armed Forces Radio
Why is he still allowed to spew his anti-American hate over Armed Forces Radio? Our troops should not be subjected to his vitriol. I can understand why Bush needed his propaganda, but why has Obama allowed it to continue?

Lets jack this up with recommendations - please keep the comments clean and rational. Then send the link in an e-mail to your Congress members requesting the immediate termination Rush's hate show from Armed Forces Radio.

Thank you

Air America should be allowed on ARFTS. Limbaugh should not be. MSNBC should be allowed on AFRTS. Fox News should not be.

The 'troops' have been getting a month off every year for many, many years. It is called 'leave' and it is 30 days every year.

My first leave was 30 days in 1953, as I recall.

174. That has zero to do with who gets to make decisions on what the content is.
I am pretty sure the KKK would "donate" some air time to put out their views but should they be allowed access also. I am pretty sure many soldiers would find their views appealing as well. Tax payer money is used to fund Armed Forces Radio and tax payers should have some say in how their money is spent. Maybe not directly but through their representation in Congress. I personally find Limbaugh as offensive or even more so than the KKK because he is more insidious and not quite as overt..

At least if they're going to have him on, which they shouldn't because he is a LYING LIAR, but if they are going to have him on they should represent the other end of the spectrum.

In fact, they should have Hartmann on to represent the center and then have Alex Jones or Noam Chomsky on to counteract Limpballs.

87. What?
Uhm because, as I was told when I enlisted, "the army is not a democracy."

Well that was the short answer, the longer answer is that AFRTs (armed forces radio and television) is not a branch of the republican party. They are not required nor obligated to publishing, distributing, or broadcasting propaganda and theoretically they are supposed to be apolitical.

You need to justify allowing that bloated tick airtime to indoctrinate our troops in right wing propaganda. I mean if we are going to allow politcal commentary on that scale shouldn't we also have Air America given equal time? Or maybe the young turks or Amy goodman?

104. And You Have Proof For That How???
AFRTS doesn't put programming on based on ratings but thanks to pressure from the large radio corporates who used their clout during the boooosh years to dictate programming.

Personally, I am against any form of censorship and really could care less if AFRTS carries the lying windbag. I have far more faith in the American people...especially those in the military, to know what a liar and traitor Oxy boy is.

But then, sounds like you're here to troll. How'd you like your pizza? Enjoy your very brief stay...

115. Actually the answer to letting the troopps decide is "No"
Under the rules of the United States Military it is irrelevant who or what the troops like.

If the troops wanted to hear a xenophobic racist screaming about killing all Asians and Jews because they were trying to take over the world - the US Military would not allow that on the radio or TV

Limbaugh does cross the line in his attacks on Obama and that is a violation of the rules that the military has set out (at least the ones that I were there in 1990)

The military is about good order and discipline, not about popularity or good times

Members of the service are not allowed to
-Openly criticize the Commander-in-Chief
-Wear their uniform at a partisan political event
-Use their active duty status to promote political causes

But to turn it around, if they aren't to be politicized, should the military be allowed to vote?

152. The rule against uniforms at partisan events
Active-duty military personnel can appear at political rallies and protests, but while wearing civilian clothes. To participate in such political rallies while in uniform is to suggest that the active-duty soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine does so as a soldier and uses authority as such or is at it to do some such function as domestic spying upon the activity on behalf or the Armed Services which are prohibited from doing so.

... like Hannity and Beck et al, because they might say they have the right to freedom of speech and a right to their opinion, then the DoD only has to listen to them for just a few minutes to hear these hatemongers repeat lie after lie and various other misquotes and exaggerations. They aren't just sharing their personal opinion. They are spreading ideological propaganda and they will do whatever it takes to get it done. And that includes lying their weasel asses off.

'I got these off Daily Kos-- had one that was no longer a sponsor (it isn't on this list), and there may be others I haven't heard back from -- but this was the most comprehensive list I could find.

here's my letter to:

Hi. My name is ____________________. I recently found out that your company advertises on Rush Limbaugh's show.

In the past, I've found his show distasteful and regrettable, but after Mr. Limbaugh's recent remarks -- wherein he said he hoped our new President would fail -- well, my feelings have changed. Our country is at war. And facing an historic global economic crisis. And Mr. Limbaugh wants our leadership to fail?

I know you're running a business and likely won't change anything because of the comments of one customer, but it makes me feel better to let you know that I can no longer patronize your business. And I'm encouraging thousands of others -- via email and the internet -- to to do the same.

I think it's time decent people stand together as one and support our President as he tries to solve the nation's problems. We may not have all voted for him, but who in good conscience -- especially in these dire times -- could wish for him to fail, as Mr. Limbaugh has done?

The entire world is looking at America right now as a sign of hope and possibility. We must succeed. We must not shame ourselves in the international spotlight by showcasing bigotry, racism, or petty politics.

Thank you for your time.

And I look forward to when I can patronize your business again.

Sincerely,

They sound a lot alike and some soldiers would never notice the difference. Except Ed would have a different point of view. Then they could judge their viewpoints more on merit.

How did he get on there, anyway?

The government does not have to give the troops any media, that is not required.

So why did they pick OxyRush? Because they were a Republican administration and he cheered it on. But now, when Bloatbaugh is trashing their CIC every day?

If we have to provide them with media, let it be something more neutral than Limpdick.

Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 12:15 PM by newtothegame
The military loves Obama; why can't we provide a viable show as well? Something from Air America? We need to think in terms of providing a viable alternative, not just eliminating anything we don't like. If our side is right, we'll prevail in a debate anyways. I have my doubts after Air America's listenership though; putting an unsuccessful show on that noone wants to listen to just to have an opposition voice seems wasteful.

45. If Wikipedia is correct
Ed Schultz is currently on AFR:

AFN also offers a variety of radio programming over its various frequencies throughout the world. Not only is there local programming (with sailors and soldiers as disc jockeys), but there is satellite programming, as well. Music programming spans Rock, Oldies, R&B and country music. Ryan Seacrest's AT 40 and the American Country Countdown with Kix Brooks are broadcast weekly over AFN Radio. In addition to music, AFN broadcasts syndicated talk radio programs such as Car Talk, Kim Komando, Rush Limbaugh, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, The Motley Fool Radio Show, A Prairie Home Companion, Dr. Laura, Sports Overnight America, and other programs from National Public Radio and other sources. Letters From War by Mark Schultz was the #1 song on AFN in 2004. Weekly religious ecumenical programming on Sunday's includes First Radio Parish Church of America with Rev. Peter Panagore.

On December 5, 2005, liberal/progressive Ed Schultz from Jones Radio Network and conservative talk show host Sean Hannity were added to the radio programs provided by the AFN Broadcast Center to its affiliate stations. The addition of Al Franken's show soon followed but was replaced by the Alan Colmes show when Franken started his Senatorial campaign.

I am in the military on deployment and I enjoy watching Olberman on my lunch break. It is great that AFN puts him on after Oreily. I prefer balance and for the most part, I agree with Olberman on issues much more than someone like Limbaugh. It is also funny to see how angry some soldiers get when Olberman is on. OK, I take absolute bliss over it.

I don't want content taken away because someone is critical to the current occupant of the whitehouse just as I wouldn't want Olberman or Rachel Maddow removed if a Republican was in office.

He's an agent, a tool... he's not the Propaganda Minister, but he IS the TOP puppet... and one
cannot attain such heights, lacking ANY perceivable talent save that of extended whining, without
MAJOR backing from the usual shadowy forces... he will likely continue to enjoy the hospitality of
the US Army, seeing what a foaming lapdog of war, what a cheerleader for human slaughter he has been over the long years..

What a pity. He was the first, as I recall, to attack a sitting president's young daughter, who was a completely innocent 13-yr-old.

The late columnist Molly Ivins reported:

"On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, 'Did you know there's a White House dog?' Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.

When viewers objected, he claimed, in typical Limbaugh fashion, that the gag was an accident and that without his permission some technician had put up the picture of Chelsea -- which I found as disgusting as his original attempt at humor."

He should be banned for complete and utter lack of basic social graces. He's a circus monkey who's been trained to hurl his feces at ANYTHING AT ALL marked with a (D).

Hell, on his very BEST day, he comes off like Father Coughlin on a nitrous bender.

How would you feel if you were deployed and the OFFICIAL radio station carried someone telling you your CIC isn't patriotic, doesn't support America, doesn't support the troops, should FAIL, and in the context of Honduras, implied that the military should stage a coup against him? That's not just disgusting, it is treason. As I said, our troops deserve better.

99. This issue of Limbaugh came up in the Senate
five years ago, and the Senate voted unanimously, even then, to bring more balance to the type of programming the troops were exposed to. The demand came after Rush Limbaugh's disgusting comments about the abuse at Abu Ghraib leading some politicians to say he was harming the troops and the US around the world, with his remarks.

http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/pdf/harkin-press-release-20040617.pdf

June 16, 2004 (Washington, DC) -- Democracy Radio and Media Matters for America today
lauded Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and the entire United States Senate for calling on the
American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) to provide political balance in its
public affairs programming. On June 14, 2004, Senator Harkin introduced an amendment to the
2004 Department of Defense authorization bill, calling on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
to develop appropriate methods of oversight to ensure the news service presents balanced
political programming. The measure passed in the Senate by unanimous consent.

“It’s gratifying that the United States Senate recognizes that AFRTS is failing to provide
politically balanced radio programming to its soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines,” said Tom
Athans, executive director of Democracy Radio. “Our fighting men and women hold a variety of
political beliefs and they deserve to hear diverse programming that more fairly reflects those
beliefs.”

He was not removed, airc, but instead there were calls to air some liberal viewpoints for balance, and Ed Schultz was chosen as a counter to Rush Limbaugh. I don't know if the coverage is balanced now or not, but the whole issue was dropped once Ed Schultz was put on the air.

Desperate Army Recruits Neo-Nazis

'Why the U.S. military is ignoring its own regulations and permitting white supremacists to join.

On a muggy Florida evening in 2008, I meet Iraq War veteran Forrest Fogarty in the Winghouse, a little bar-restaurant on the outskirts of Tampa, his favorite hangout. He told me on the phone I would recognize him by his skinhead. Sure enough, when I spot a white guy at a table by the door with a shaved head, white tank top and bulging muscles, I know it can only be him.'

What are the conservatives going to say? We have 60 Democrats in the Senate, a majority in the House, and we hold the Executive Branch. We should run Rush Limbaugh off the radio and let the Republicans scream.

122. BINGO Geek_Girl - that's EXACTLY why I posted this!
Do NOT forget to write the White House, your representative, and your senators about this! Limbaugh's anti-American diatribes should NOT be broadcast to our troops! They deserve better.

I'm not sure President Obama even knows about it.

127. So does Michael Savage, So does The Grand Dragon of the KKK
For the military it is irrelevant whether or not someone has listeners or is popular

It is whether what the person is saying violates the rules of the Military.

I'm not sure how he stays on AFR, since his comments do cross that line (at least the one's in place back when I was in)

Differing voices need to be heard as well, but silencing voices (even the vileness of the Limbaugh's in this world) will NEVER be the right answer.

171. Investigate Why Treason is Broadcast to Our Armed Forces!
What is the benefit of exposure to our Armed Forces with the villiany, treason and sedition.

Rush Limbaugh, the obese bigot with the drug problem, should be banned from any exposure to the troops at all. Or indeed to society anywhere.
