Rep. Steve King(R-Iowa) Votes Against Acknowledging Slave Labor Constrution of US Capitol
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/08/rep-steve-king-lone-vote_n_227866.html

That the United States Capitol, and specifically the Statue of Freedom that rests above it, was built by slave labor has long been a source of shame. The House sought to redress that grievance on Tuesday evening, however slightly, with a resolution acknowledging the role slaves played in the construction.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) isn't having it.

The resolution passed 399-1, with King voting against.

The purpose of the resolution, according to its text, is to direct "the Architect of the Capitol to place a marker in Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center which acknowledges the role that slave labor played in the construction of the United States Capitol."

A King spokesman did not immediately return a call, but when he does, we'll update with his reasoning for voting no.

Sad...

2. They weren't really "slaves" per se.....
They were "private contractors" hired by entrepreneurs using the labor "free market".

These "private contractors" chose to be enslaved as evidenced by their lack of resistance to the lifestyle that provided housing and food in exchange for their labor....

:sarcasm:

5. He's been making noises about running for Governor (Iowa)
since the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of equal rights marriage. Got poor Rep. King's feathers all ruffled.

The western end of the state (where he's from) trends redneck, but I'm just bewildered how this miscreant ever got elected. I really thought we were smarter than that.

6. Yet again King and Grassley bring shame to Iowa
Grassley for his "get a federal job" moment Friday.
King won't run for governor unless it's a guaranteed win.

7. I mailed a blistering letter to Grassley's office about that
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 05:38 PM by Sal Minella
"Get a government job" advice to the guy in the audience who wanted health insurance -- I've been furious at Grassley before but this is the STUPIDEST thing he's said so far that I know of.

It sounds to me like King's "hostage holding" accusation runs the wrong way -- I get the sense (from NPR) that King voted against the slavery plaque in poutrage because the Dems wouldn't let him have his "In God We Trust" plaque in the Capitol.....

Separation of Church and State. How come this concept is so far beyond these people???

Edit: Sound bite just on Iowa Public Radio -- Rep. Steve King is sick and tired of the Democrats "trying to erase every last vestige of this country's Judaeo-Christian heritage" from Washington DC, and he is expressing his unhappiness this way.

He said he thinks a lot of other lawmakers would have voted with him, but they didn't have the courage to stand up for what they believe in.

Or, maybe.....they do understand "separation of Church and State?"
