Do any of you make a living by providing a service
that truly helps people, and if so, what exactly is it that you do? For many that are trying to find a way towards earning money and are fed up with trying to just find a J-O-B ( just over broke), the path to abundance is said to be found in helping others. What are some real life ways a person could carry out this path?

1. yeah,
in marketing for a fire/water/etc. cleaning-restoration company. When our customers call us b/c their house is flooded, or burnt, or they have a suicide that needs clean up, they are typically on the verge of hysteria. We calm them, help them , and fix their problem. Recent surveys performed by an outside firm say our customers select the word "hero" most when asked to describe us.

Those suicide calls are tough, though.

7. Wow... I could have really used that service about 30 years ago...
My step-brother shot himself in the head... my dad and I cleaned up the mess. The cops gave us some special cleaning supplies, but that was all the assistance we were given. We really didn't want to call in a maid service for that job. Kudos to you!

13. Thanks. I was surprised to find that ones homeowners policy will
pay for the cleaning, sanitizing, etc. It's a creepy job and I don't like to go but someone has to and if my techs are going to clean it, I better be able to look at it...

Some of my more experienced techs have cleaned up murder/suicides where whole families were involved and I'll say this -- those jobs can make a grown man cry.

25. I used to work for a company like that,
except I would not do suicides/shootings. Lots of fires and water damage, though. Sewer back-ups were the worst I ever got sent on!

:hi:

30. I didn't know that there was a service that did this
until a patient's parent told me that there was. I honestly never thought about who had to clean up the messes.
Both of their kids were stabbed by the other parent and from what I understand, it was a horrific mess.
Kudos to you all to undertake a job like this.

24. Just at a far lower pay scale
New hires can thank Flakey Blakey, who was appointed as FAA Administrator despite having no formal aviation education and never held so much as a private pilot certificate. But no thanks is needed, really. Her thanks was being able to move on to bigger and better things vis a vis the CEO of AIA, which lobbies congress for more money for the defense industry.

29. That remains to be seen. Our new contract is almost complete.
Federal arbitrators are deciding the pay issue as we speak.

We should have their decision in less than 30 days.

3. I wish I could.
I have 6 certifications across the personal trainer and sports nutrition spectrum, but I don't make a living at it. I'm too cheap to hire (I don't think folks needing that sort of help should be double-whammied by getting hit with expensive training and nutrition fees, and a promise I made to myself). I do it on the side, along with my animal rescue funded by my corporate shill job.

8. I've been working
from my home new mothers with their breastfeeding. I'm a licensed nurse, I nursed my children long term, and have accumulated tons of seminar hours, read books, etc. I'm very good at what I do. I was going to sit for the Board exam for the specialty, but I'm not convinced it'll improve my income opportunities. I have only made money on pump rentals and sales, but not much. I tend to be very supportive of whatever decisions they make as new moms, but I also don't lie to them about wht research says, if there is any on that subject.

People don't value stuff you offer for free. That much I've learned.

11. Yeah, I'm a dentist
and much of the humanism, counseling, assistance, recommendations for all things count in my job description. there are no billable codes for these so I guess I just do them because I'm a human being.

I have set up two couples who wound up marrying, had children, and are still together.

I would not suggest that you become an ETHICAL dentist with the requirement that you need to earn a lot of money. ain't gonna happen.

22. Things like couples meeting, etc have happened over
me, too, but because I was friends with people from two departments. I was the link where that enabled them to meet. Same with a hospitalization I had. My nurse met a coworker and they married. They swore they never could have met if I hadn't been sick. (Make that "deathly ill")

14. I do at least two pro bono jobs a year for charitable organizations
Every one of my pro bono clients are barely getting by. Soup kitchens, shelters, church sponsored drug and drink programs, etc.

I organized a national effort to reuse unwanted restaurant/institutional kitchen appliances in soup kitchens. It ultimately withered due to lack of donors. But that doesn't diminish the satisfaction of having done it.

15. I teach people
how to do their job better (lower fuel consumption, less machinery breakdown, work smarter etc.). I help them advance their careers.

You actually have the correct idea. Helping people cannot be so easily outsourced or eliminated. I wish I knew that 30 years ago, when I concentrated on machines and not people.

In my case it's a part time job for a retired person.

19. I help make GASOLINE
Yep I work in a refinery - I service computerized control systems. The operators seem pretty happy when I fix the control devices and all the alarms and bells stop going off.

John Q. Public should be pretty happy (but he is NOT) that 1 of the 16 oil refineries in the country did not burn down today (which would resulted in a sharp increase in gasoline prices) and the computer as yet to thank me - it just keeps recording the numbers

32. I work in a library
at a university. I'm a Library Technician in the Cataloging department. I get to put new materials in the catalog and add subject headings that make them easier to find.

I don't know how much of a public service that is, considering how few people actually go to libraries to read these days, but seeing someone find what they're looking for or things they didn't even know they were looking for is moderately fulfilling.
