Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliff risks American box office (confirms view of some that HP is satanic)
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 11:33 PM by lindisfarne
:sarcasm: on "confirms view of some" aspect - too many people fail to get that I was ridiculing those with that ludicrous view :sarcasm: :sarcasm:
Is that enough? One more for good measure :sarcasm:
Did people even read what I posted including last line (FoF)?

...
In an interview with Esquire magazine, Radcliffe risked the US box office prospects of the new Harry Potter film by declaring himself to be an atheist.

In a pronouncement that will dismay America's religious Right, which has long voiced suspicions about Potter's "anti-Christian" message, the 19-year-old actor said he did not believe in God.

He also expressed his admiration for Professor Richard Dawkins, the prominent atheist and bete noir of Evangelical Christians.

Radcliffe has been reticent on the subject of religion in the past, but in an interview to promote the latest instalment in the film franchise, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, released on July 15, he said: "I'm an atheist, but I'm very relaxed about it. I don't preach my atheism, but I have a huge amount of respect for people like Richard Dawkins who do. Anything he does on television, I will watch."

He joked: "There we go, Dan, that's half of America that's not going to see the next Harry Potter film on the back of that comment."

JK Rowling's stories of the schoolboy wizard are taken very seriously by some Evangelical Christians in the United States. One of the largest Christian groups in the country, Focus on the Family, denounced the books as "witchcraft".

2. So you think because Dan is an Atheist
That makes Harry Potter in some way satanic?

This is one of those times.

26. Checked Rapture Ready and so far not a word about it.
I'm really surprised they haven't picked up on it yet, since they think that the Harry Potter books and movies are satanic.

4. Dan rocks. Who cares if does not believe in God? I do and I don't care who does not.
My kids love Harry Potter and we will all be going to see the new movie. And yes, I am a 33 year old geek who likes movies about a boy wizard and his friends.

13. I started out loving the HP books, but
I think they've gotten weaker as they've gone on. I really had to make myself finish the last one.

I'll watch the last films, but I'm really not looking forward to them.

Now when The Lightning Thief movie comes out, I'll be excited.

17. Really? I thought they got better, especially the movies. They are more mature now.
I think Half Blood Prince was my favorite book too.

5. I don't think there's anything to worry about...
I suspect most of his fans, if not all of them, could give a good goddamn about his atheism.

Time will tell, of course.

I respect his willingness to be open about his beliefs, come hell or high water.

How many Evangelicals were going to see the movie, anyway?

6. There is nothing in the Telegraph article that suggests
'satanic', so I'm assuming that comes from you?

That's pretty irresponsible of you. I know this is GD and not Latest Breaking, but a bit of accuracy in reporting wouldn't hurt.

11. I understood the article perfectly.
There is no reference to satanism in it - unless one automatically equate "anti-Christian" and "witchcraft" with satanism.

I don't draw that conclusion.

You seem to be the one doing it - and frankly, I find THAT ludicrous.

12. No, I said "confirms view of some" and in fact, that was the basis for many censor attempts on this
book. I honestly thought DUers would be aware of that. sigh.

16. Look, the point here is that
your post was unclear. I'm not the only person who read your comments (both in the title and after the clip) as something other than sarcasm.

I'm more than willing to accept that you suffered a temporary sarcasm failure. It happens - it's no big deal. Getting defensive about it is really unnecessary - and the added snark of assuming that we're all clueless dolts isn't helping your cause.

Move on.

18. "confirms view of some" plus the fact that the view is ludicrous(at least for any reasonable person)
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 11:56 PM by lindisfarne
plus the whole post, should have made it clear.
Instead, some DUers just attack, without thinking.
Then, you wondered where the "satanism" came from ("There is no reference to satanism in it - unless one automatically equate "anti-Christian" and "witchcraft" with satanism.")? You missed at least 3 years of heated controversy over the books, when parent were calling for them to be yanked from school & public libraries. (and the controversy still simmers now; I can just imagine teachers in the south trying to show the movie in a public school). Accusations of satanism were frequent from the nuts in the religious fray.

25. Most of the highly religious in America view atheism as Satanism.
Same thing to a binary mind - if you don't worship god, you worship satan.

7. Where is there a reference to Satanism?
There are witches and wizards in Narnia, the Wizard of Oz, Tolkien, Arthurian tales...and the Fundies don't picket those books and films! The absence of belief doesn't make a person satanic. Satanism, after all, requires belief in the supernatural.

The people who are going to be outraged over this are the same people who have already been boycotting the HP movies and books.

I've been curious about this. Fortunately the people who aren't going to watch the new movie after this announcement are probably the ones who weren't planning to watch it to begin with, so I'm not sure if it actually changes anything.

28. Agreed. Although with $50 million in the bank, he's in a safer position than most to announce it.
Still, it opens the door for atheists being seen as something other than satanic, immoral individuals.
