A belt mark across the 10-year-old's back showed what police said these kids were getting away from. Detectives said their 3-year-old brother, left unsupervised, got into some paint in the home.
“They said they were running away from home because their mom's boyfriend had beat them up, beat them with a belt,” said Bullitt County Detective Scotty McGaha.
Bullitt County police said the boys waited until their mom, 28-year-old Kelly Porter and her boyfriend Steven William Morris, 43, were asleep. They packed clothes, toys, their birth certificates and items they said they could use as weapons, and headed out the window, police said.
“They had packed up some items. We learned later that they had a hammer, a screwdriver, a light bulb and a GPS tracking device,” said McGaha.
“Now can you imagine two little kids carrying all this stuff in backpacks going down the road and stuffed animals in their hands?” said Livergood.
Police said the children walked nearly a quarter of a mile before a good Samaritan picked them up.

The three children are now with their grandmother, who said she had no idea they weren't safe in their own home.
”I told the officers last night if I knew this was going on, he would be dead. I would have killed him,” said Livergood.

A pair of Salt Lake City men are accused of assaulting their grandmother with bottles of shampoo and baby powder before urinating on the woman and leaving her injured in a bathroom.
The attack occurred July 2 at a home near 700 South and 300 East, according to charging documents filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.
Michael Levi Hansen Jr., 20, and Christopher Eugene Hansen, 22, forced their way into a bathroom in the home they shared with their 66-year-old grandmother as the woman was taking a shower, court documents state.
Christopher Hansen allegedly threw bottles of shampoo and baby powder at her. He then punched the woman in the face and pushed her into a bathtub, causing her to hit her head as she fell, according to charging documents.
Christopher Hansen proceeded to urinate on his grandmother, then left the bathroom and damaged a living room cabinet.
As his grandmother tried to leave the bathroom, Michael Hansen shoved and hit the woman. Hansen then urinated on his grandmother's clothing and punched holes in the walls, court documents state.
