Akron police investigate teen mob attack on family

Akron police say they aren't ready to call it a hate crime or a gang initiation.

But to Marty Marshall, his wife and two kids, it seems pretty clear.

It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend's home in South Akron.

Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ''This is our world'' and ''This is a black world'' as they confronted Marshall and his family.

The Marshalls, who are white, say the crowd of teens who attacked them and two friends June 27 on Girard Street numbered close to 50. The teens were all black.

''This was almost like being a terrorist act,'' Marshall said. ''And we allow this to go on in our neighborhoods?''

They said it started when one teen, without any words or warning, blindsided and assaulted Marshall's friend as he stood outside with the others.

When Marshall, 39, jumped in, he found himself being attacked by the growing group of teens.

His daughter, Rachel, 15, who weighs about 90 pounds, tried to come to his rescue. The teens pushed her to the ground.

His wife, Yvonne, pushed their son, Donald, 14, into bushes to keep him protected.

To stoke up some people that are racist.

I think, and most people also think, that all people of all races and religions and classes have equal dignity. If their is a problem, it is not based on race, but on the individual actions of people.

And I agree, many stories in the news are exaggerated, which leads us to the need of diversification in ownership so different news outlets can comment on parts of stories that are not real.

With your back to a wall, only 2-3 can come at you at any time.

Typically in the US, mobs are not quite as crazy as seen in other parts of the world since they tend not to be as passionate and more recreational. If they have to climb over bodies to get to you they will pause. The visuals coupled with the screams of their injured tend to break the mob mentality. That said most people are not willing to be as vicious as required to do that. Some of the stories from the Rodney King riots survivors are interesting in that regards.

younger black males (males in general really) can do some really dumb shit, and have it all justified in their minds that it was a great thing to do. My son is an aspiring rapper, but finds it hard to perform anywhere because the crowds that come to rap events always has one or two knuckle-heads that think fighting is going to make them look more manly then all the other males in the area.

we've attended one event that didn't have any problems but it was like a prison. metal detectors, cleared the parking lot, once you come in to the event you can't go back out, security was aggressive but polite, (hey sir, please don't smoke that weed in here. thank you.)

but I wouldn't also be surprised if the victim didn't help the events along by making some stupid racial comment.

I know, because I and my other pasty white teen friends tended to do dumber things when we were together than any of us would do individually. (Dumb stuff for us was along the lines of egging houses, public intox, DUI on mopeds, etc. Not too violent, but not too smart, either.) When you get a group of three or more male teenagers together, their collective I.Q. probably drops 10 or 20 points.

So I have no problem believing that a group of black teens did something violent and stupid in this case (and I agree, the victim possibly said something he shouldn't).

I also have no problem believing that a group of white teens could do the same thing. And I sure wouldn't kneejerk react to such a story by saying that the victim was lying (as the OP did in an epic fail of fact-checking).
