Cantor: There is 'no way to defend' stimulus
@ 1:33 pm by Jeremy P. Jacobs

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) continued his assault on President Obama's stimulus package on Thursday, saying the bill has "not had the desired effect."

Cantor, appearing on MSNBC, said something new needs to be done to address the sagging economy.

"I think the question is really where do we go from here," Cantor said.

There is "no way to defend this spending bill," he added.

Earlier this week, Cantor said that "we all agree" that the stimulus hasn't worked.

Democrats fired back on Cantor Monday when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a statement saying that it was "hypocrisy" for Cantor to blast the legislation after supporting funding for light rail in Virginia that is included in the bill.

1. I don't see the contradiction.
He opposed the legislation, but it passed.

Since it passed, he wants to use the money allotted to his state to create new jobs.

The positions are definitely not mutually exclusive.

2. Today he says he can't defend it while enjoying the fruits of
jobs being created? I see the contradiction. He can't defend it even though it's working?

3. An illustration:
Let's say your husband (this is illustrative, it doesn't matter if you actually have one or not) says "We have no money, we have no jobs, our mortgage is being foreclosed, and we have a ton of bills but I'm going to bounce a check and take us all to Disneyworld!"

You voice your disapproval, but he says "I have the checkbook and I'm writing the check whether you agree or not."

He's going. The tickets are "paid for".

You say "Well, if you're going anyway, take the kids."

Does your statement contradict your opposition to the unwarranted spending spree?

4. I'm not in the habit of defending pukes, so I won't start now.
Cantor admitted the stimulus was creating jobs, which is what it was supposed to do, yet now he claims it's not working. Sorry, I see a contradiction.

5. You don't have to "defend" them, but you can evaluate their statements logically.
His belief is that the cost of the legislation exceeds the values of the jobs it will create. He may even believe that, overall, the legislation will cost more jobs (by harming businesses and/or the economy in general) that it will create.

That doesn't mean that jobs won't be created...they just might not exceed the jobs lost.
