3. Nah..
thats EXACTLY how you feel...don't be so modest (or annoying depending on the current gas prices and how many bicyclist got in my way on the roads that are paid for with a GAS tax)

4. Roads are only partially paid for with gas taxes
A large portion of the funding comes from General Revenue sources.

In my city of 200K the city spends several million dollars on roads that's not paid for with gas taxes.

And don't get me started on the percentage of the Defense Budget that exists solely to make America safe for cheap oil.

5. Yeah, and those that make their livings on the road like truckers, cab/limo drivers
delivery folks, etc, should just shut the fuck up. Fuck 'em.

18. If you've got it, a truck probably brought it
I do remember a year ago, when diesel prices were through the roof, the prices of many food items were sky-high as well. High fuel prices hurt even people who don't drive.

6. Americans have never fully understood how underpriced our gas
has been. Add one more category to those who should not complain of inevitably rising gas prices: the majority of car commuters in every state and city who drive alone. Visit any city during commute time, and you will observe thousand of cars trapped in gridlock, and almost every on of those cars will contain only the driver. It's absolute madness.

8. Do you know difficult it is to find a fellow commuter who shares your taste in music?
And what if one of you smokes?

13. There is always a reason. I'm guilty myself, but it is an untenable
situation. Even our heavily subzidized and undertaxed gas will soon become too precious to burn. I am looking for a massive change in every aspect of American life, including work commute patterns. The party is almost over, unless someone can find a viable renewable alternative.

7. Some of us must drive to work...
There is no public transit to my workplace and I can't afford to live any closer, not on a teacher's salary. So it's 54 miles round trip every freaking day. It's gotten old but there it is.

9. A 27 mile bike ride is barely enough to work up a sweat if you're in good shape
Now you have a goal

15. No thanks.
I don't have to drive that far; work is 13 miles away.

I'm not riding my bike 13 miles on the frozen (single digits, sometimes negative) ice, in the darkest dark (no street lights.)

Not to mention that I'd have to drive my bike 3 miles over the un-plowed gravel county roads to get to pavement. Or is there a bike that handles the snow load, as well as the black ice?

Then there is the steep hill to climb (and slide down) at the work end of the trip; I don't think I could get a bicycle up it.

Plenty of biking goes on in my area for the 4 good months of weather a year. NONE of the serious bikers ride ANYWHERE in the winter.

12. Seriously, I disagree because most of the wasted gas involves short trips
For walking or biking, you have to live within a couple miles of your destination.

If I bike to work instead of drive I save about a quart of gasoline.

If money was my only motivation the tax would have to be about $5.00 a gallon to make it worthwhile.

If that happened the ripple effects on our economy would be catastrophic.

I've had to, and high gas prices makes it all the more difficult.

17. Depends on your definition of commute
I've always lived within a few miles of my place of employment

Largely because when I was in college the first Gulf War started and I decided that oil wars are a bad thing.

20. People always complain about gas prices on O'ahu
yes, they're higher here (around $3 at present) -- but the entire island is only 600 sq. mi., or twice the size of the five boroughs of NYC. Much of this is mountainous or semi-rural, to boot. :eyes:
