What does Rec/Unrec mean to you?

As I see it, the only function is to boost or remove a post from the Greatest page. As I never go to the Greatest page the number of recs or unrecs means absolutely nothing. In fact, I still use the old lobby as the quickest entry point to DUs forums.

So my question is; what is your entry page to DU?

11. I know you have "other" in your poll, but why not list the Home Page?

I always enter DU through the Home Page because I like seeing what the hottest topics are at a glance. It's got the latest videos, the topmost Greatest posts, the most recent LBN, the topmost current discussions in Editorials, GD, & GDP -- in other words, it's an at-a-glance snapshot of what's most current in 6 different forums all at once.

I'm surprised no one else who's posted on this thread seems to be doing the same. It's a fantastic gateway page with tons of information.

I guess the few there are reflect where I'm at; I tend to steer away from the crowds and find little nuggets of interest.

13. I generally start at "Latest", but I do occassionally check out "Greatest".

However, it's obvious that getting a high number of recs can cause a thread to get lots of attention. I've had a few threads that garnered attention beyond DU that would not have done so if they hadn't gotten a high number of recs.

14. It Lets Me Know What The Really Cool Kids Are Doing

The "recommend" feature always used to be the way I would know what the cool kids on DU thought.

If I saw a thread with lots and lots of recommends, I KNEW that the cool kids liked it, and thought it was waaaay cool.

It gave me a sense of knowing how to belong.

I want -- NEED, really -- to know what the cool kids think and do, so that I can try to be like them -- cool.

Now, with the "unrecommend" thing, I won't know what the cool kids are doing. They could be recommending OR unrecommeding.

I'm depressed and in need of some support.

I rarely use the rec. function. But seems others get their 15 minutes of fame with it. Oh well, if this toy is so important, and leads to the GBCW and other "outrages", ones life must really suck. I rarely post anything but a link. I haven't posted a commentary (or vanity) post in 5 yeras cause I know most people here couldn't care less.

From what I've seen about 75% of the "Greatest Page" consists of "K&R if you think..." or some other bullshit topic designed to make it on the "Greatest Page" by trying to get one group to vote it up in the face of the opposing group.
