Use sparingly.
Use cautiously. At least that's what I intend to do. Same as I do with the HR feature at kos.

1. Fat chance of that happening.
Good posts will start in the hole, without a number and never make it out. Anonymous votes will keep important issues and lively discussions off the greatest page. People who check into DU's Greatest Page to get a feel for what is being discussed on a given day will miss out on a lot.

Those who spend their time in GD or GDP won't really be effected, but those who bop in will. I know that when posts get to the 5 rec mark, they have the potential to take off. Now they can be kept out.

3. We'll see. I expect DUers will largely be respectful with the unrec
button. I hope I'm right and you're wrong.

7. well, I honestly don't see anything worthy of unrecommending in my post
so it appears it's not working so well. Oh the other hand, it might take a while for people to realize that it's not something that should be abused. We'll see.

12. Do all have to see things exactly as you do, what or what is not worthy?
Is there a possibility, however small, that some people might disagree with you?

13. Of course, but that's not my point.
And please tell me what was offensive or over the line about my OP. I'm truly curious.

15. I have no idea, but I wouldn't discount the possiblity that someone else might.
Ever consider that there are simply some pissy and unhappy people here at DU?

16. sure, there are petty people here. there are childish people here
and those folks will sorely abuse the unrec function.

22. That's the risk we take when we give people freedoms and choices,
they might abuse them. Such is life.

2. Kos has specific guidelines for using the HR features.
It does so to limit popularity contests.

This is a free-for-all and it will not end well.

4. yeah, I know. And I really like those guidelines. There are other
differences too, but I hope people here will rise to the challenge.

feature alone is used for popularity contests here?

9. The old rec feature generally ended up with multiple and conflicting POVs getting recs....
but it did have the feature of having the best statement and argumentation of each point of view rise to the top.

24. Sure, but there are popularity factions that propel
provocative ideas to the Greatest. Thus; legalizing pot, atheism, smoking, and vegetarianism; get as fair a shot on the greatest as; anti-abortion, pro-christianity, and pro-death penalty. In that way, the Greatest shows the breadth of the community and the fierce engagement of its members.

Unrecommend ensures that only the most widely popular ideas get a fair hearing in the public sphere. I believe that it will contribute to the dumbing down of DU much like corporate news has contributed to the dumbing down of political and social engagement.

10. There's a reason why Kos only gives you 5 HRs.
Otherwise, the disrupters and spammers would HR everything that annoys them, or everything that's not theirs, and you'd see no end of abuse.

HR's are under a tight leash in Daily Kos. You only get five, you only get them if you have Trusted User status, and if you're caught abusing them (you're not allowed to HR a comment simply for disagreeing with it, you have to use them to whack spammers, trolls and other disrupters) you could be banned.

I hope Skinner keeps an eye on things and is ready to put a stop to abusers of Unrecs...

but I still hope folks will not act childishly about this once they get used to it.

edited to add: And you can see who hrs any given comment.

would not like that, however.

17. I agree - the new *ease* of rec/unrec leads to more misuse than the existence of unrec, imo.

like the limit on numbers of negative ratings each TU has.

who do not like Cali very much. I've seen some call her out publicly but now they get to do it anonymously.
