Just Checked In And Saw The New Feature. Then I Saw The Whining. Then I Saw How Well It Works.

I was quite impressed when I just logged on and saw that the years long suggestion to have an unrecommended feature has actually been implemented. Huge thanks to Skinner and team for that, since any upgrade like that is always tough to do both from a mental perspective and a labor perspective. But then I saw the outcome that is ALWAYS found whenever ANY upgrade is done to DU; and that's the incessant whining. I wanted to keep an open mind though, and wondered if they had a point. Was this feature really going let good threads fall that shouldn't? Would it be unfair and abused? If I looked up, was the sky actually indeed falling?

Well, I think the answers to those questions are very easily found just by browsing GD while keeping an eye on the rec tally. I was amazed at how quickly the >5 threads stood out, and almost EVERY SINGLE ONE was worthy of reading. The <0 threads? Mostly full of fluff, whining, flamebait, etc.

Now granted, that is not written in stone, but it was indeed quite impressive how valuable this system already seemed to be. I can see it saving me a ton of time in the future.

Don't believe me? Just scan the right column and then read the title. Tell me if you can't see the stark difference in content.

Great job to the admins and to the rest of you, keep an open mind and let the change work for you!

Let's be serious. We all know that we all really do enjoy the threads with lots of sniping and posters off their meds. Those make for great conversation, but they really don't mean anything. It's dogs fighting over a chew toy.

We occasionally let go of the chew toy, however, when quality threads appear. We don't always fret over those threads. We might now discuss them much, but we read them and we want others to read them.
