Attn Skinner; Please dump the Unrecommend function
I know this your world and I just live in it but ......

If I posted Blue is my fave color on DU I would get @ least 50 posts on why I hate women/blacks/gays/union workers/people from Wisconsin, and so on
but the Unrecommend function is gas to forest fire.

1. I don't go as far as you do but the internet mob effect is more likely
to produce unrecs than recs, imo.

People pay more attention to what they don't like than to stuff that is fine with them.

2. I think my favorite part of it is Skinner's own comment...
"We do not expect that this will be a huge change for DU."

4. I think it's fine
and the only time anybody recommends one of my threads is when I've gone on some kind of whacked out late night rant -- threads that should have been "unrecommended" by the way. This gives people a voice as to what they think DU should be about. It'll be weird for about 2 weeks, and then I think it will settle out and most people will be reasonable.

You could strive to hold the record for the most unrecommends for a single thread. Think about it.

...lime sherbet.

12. Hopefully once the novelty wears off people will be more judicious in using it.
I know that I've already used it once on a DUer just because I don't like him. Which was kinda silly because his post wasn't offensive.

19. I am pretty new here but I think this is pretty bad change because of trolls manipulating things
Very easy for low profile trolls to come in and get enough posts to do recs and unrecs and thus keep important subjects off the greatest page.

I think it would be better to have the votes for and against available (rather than have the unrecs negate the positive support.

I also think it might be useful for us all to know who unrecs on these things so that there is transparency.

On a given political issue it would be very easy for freepers or other corporofascist types to organize campaigns to keep important topincs off the greatest page.

As with my anti-nuclear power threads, there is a very well organized opposition to the antinuke movement which can probably keep any antinuke thread from ever getting to the greatest page again.

The same can be said of many important issues.

This makes it very easy for freepers and corporofascists to stealthily control what makes it to the greatest page and I think it is probably a very bad way to go.

don't have to use it. I personally thank you and the other admins for the new function, I think it's a great idea.

28. There was a thread earlier...
about republican congressman Issa suggesting that democrats on the intelligence committees should take a lie detector test in light of the recent CIA/Congressional blow up. To me, it was an outlandish suggestion but certainly not worthy of being "unrecommended." Personally, I want to know what the right wing idiots in congress are saying. This new feature prevented this story from ever reaching the front page, hence fewer people will know about it. Because of this, I'm having my doubts about the new feature.

29. This is another perfect example of how freepers can manipulate DU
Well organized manipulation will be undetectable except in the number, quality and type of progressive stories that get kept from the greatest page.

Stories which need coverage can be deep sixed because of the unrec feature

I am sure there are some who want to manipulate DU who will be very happy to have this new feature
