1. Greatest? Rarely. Front Page? At least Daily.
And, I am surprised that some really great threads had managed to miss my attention until on the Front Page.

4. I come in through the discussion board main page, so I rarely get to the DU homepage unless
it occurs to me I should visit there. It's just that I'm a chatty person so I make a beeline to where all the conversation is happening. :)

So I really don't care what effect unrecommendations have because I'm not the type who only surfs and posts on threads that make the Greatest.

6. Less than once daily, more than once weekly. But I'll visit it more in future.
It will, hopefully, start to represent a genuine consensus of DU opinion, rather than the angry opinions of ranting cliques. A few more healthcare and other legislative policy discussions, and a few less "Obama sux and we should all hate him" posts will be a nice thing to see, I think.

agree with me, don't disagree with me. I'm not sure I'm right, so if you disagree with me my mental construct may crumble.

OK. That promise (no more commenting on rec/unrec threads) lasted maybe 120 seconds.

But at this rate I'll make 1000+ status by Saturday.

12. I can see people doing that. I usually just check the first pages of
GD and GD:P and Late Breaking, so I imagine I stumble across most of the big stories that way.

But for people who have less time to spend on DU, I can see why having a concise list of the biggest ones would be good.

Otherwise, I like to find my own threads. Besides, if it's really that good, usually it stays pretty well kicked.

Nothing against the Greatest. I think that if someone just breezes through DU, it's a good resource to quickly find what folks are appreciating the most. Some of the threads on the Greatest don't get that many responses compared to the recs.

I wonder if subconsciously I only pay attention to the ones with the most replies. If that is the case, it's unfortunate because a lot of worthy threads don't get replies.

41. Several times a day, here's how...
The left side of the GP is no longer as useful, if a thread makes it to the GP and then someone gives it an unrecommend, it drops off the page.

If/when it does return it could be far down on the page.

The left side of the GP was a easy way to scroll through the latest threads that at least 5 people thought were worth highlighting.

That use is now gone.

In edit - did anyone else use the left side of the GP in this manner?

55. I do not use the right side of the GP as much as the left side...
which Was a combination of the latest/greatest threads from any forum (that you could rec) placed in chronological order of when they hit the GP.

You could come back the next day or hours later and easily scan through the left side for the latest/greatest of the past several hours and then pick up where you left off from your last visit. If time allowed then you could visit other forums, but this was a quick and efficient use of the left side of the GP...IMHO.

What happens now is a thread might get 5 recs and be placed on the left side of the GP, then someone gives it an unrec, so it drops off the left side, a couple hours later it gets another rec and gets placed back on the left side, BUT it remains where it was placed earlier when it first hit the GP left side.

The right side of the GP does not change nearly as fast so it was not as useful, the left side is pretty much destroyed with threads dropping on and off as people rec and unrec. I can see why they are not placed at the top again as this could happen several times a day, so that would not help the functionality either.

If you look at the current "latest page" there is only about one hour of posts, several of which I would have no interest in reading and I do not want to scan through 12 pages to catch up.

In contrast the left side of the greatest page has the last day or so of threads that at least 5 people thought should get a rec, much easier to look through and also to pick up at a later point as they remained in the same order instead of dropping on and off.

Hope that makes sense, it was the best way to see a combination of the latest/greatest from all forums.

I enjoy picking and reading what I like. I don't need a rating system to tell me what to read.

59. It is where I go when checking in
I thought all the most interesting news and views rose to the greatest page so that's what I read to find out what is happening in the world. It's what is on my tool bar. I might go visit a forum if I have something to post there, but seldom just go to them. Maybe some rainy day in winter when power is still up I'll hang around to explore.
