What if threads listed the screen names of everyone who Recs/Unrecs them? |
|
Would that improve or worsen the situation?

or personal "grievances." It would make folks own their statements. Mark Morford had something similar to say about this last bit, not so long back: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2009/02/13/notes021309.DTL

20. Maybe just tie the feature (rec & unrec) to a post reply. |

You don't post; you don't have access to the rec/unrec feature.
This was my SO's recommendation *chuckle*

24. Oh, that would be epic! |
|
The Lounge would be filled with people saying they'd unrec'd more threads than anyone else. Also you'd have feuds brewing where one person was unrecing this person's thread, regardless of content, because that person had unrec'd theirs.
Then we'd get the jumpers. The massive spike in "Good-bye Cruel DU" threads. All because they found out that someone they thought liked them unrec'd their thread.
Ya, personally, I'd rather not.

36. Oh, I've no doubt most here are progressive. |
|
But that really doesn't matter, does it? It's not like we all speak in agreement.
There are also people here how are petty. And serial complainers. And hypocrites.
And while they may be progressive, they're also nuts.

33. Less than zero recs - I sure hope Skinner is taking note |
|
The unrec feature will be the death of DU's effectiveness as the voice of progressives IMHO
UNLESS Skinner et al WATCH who is unreccing and on what subjects.
There is no doubt in my mind that a celebration is going on in freeper trolltown tonight becase this system will be so easy to game and manipulate.
It SOUNDS like a great idea but in the world of dirty political manipulation the corporate right has a serious advantage when it comes to manipulating "votes"
and the unrec feature is just a vote which can be manipulated to keep the most contentious progressive issues off the front pages and out of sight.

40. I think that it would lead to people "taking names". |
|
If someone were to notice a group of "usual suspects" un-reccing them (even if it were just topic-based) it might lead to cries about "cliques" and start "beefs" between people. The anonymity of the "unrec" just implies a thread wasn't necessarily worthwhile enough to be "Greatest" material. But put a name behind it, and it starts being more about "intent." It might make people think twice, or more, before deciding to "unrec" but I don't know if that doesn't defeat the whole purpose of the "unrec" function.
