I, for one, appreciate how the unrec. finally gives balance to the greatest page. |
|
It's about time that those of us who disagree with some of the whiny, divisive, inflammatory, hero worshiping, purge-urging, and "K&R if you..." threads have a little control as to what goes on the Greatest page.
Thanks, Admins.!

1. I've witheld judgement for a few hours now, to see what direction the unrec thing would play out.... |
|
(things move VERY fast in an active community like DU.....a few hours is "plenty of time")
imHo.....the 'unrec' thing is "not a good thing" and will be used and abused by the 'worst among us'.....

4. I really don't think it will be bad at all. |
|
The only people that will be effected are those that only look at the Greatest page. Good threads will still make it to the Greatest page. Those that are commented on the most will be alive and well (and easily visible) in the GD or GDP forums even if they are unrec'ed.
All the unrec. does really is help keep the chaff off the Greatest page.

6. I guess you missed the BIG "thumbs-down" in the OP's post |
|
b/c s/he didn't put the :sarcasm: tag in there, didn't ya, TexO? "You people" only see what you want to see/hear. Even though the OP put a HUGE SIGN in front of your face!
Gotcha. ;-)

11. I 'worried' about that when I made my last post. |
|
You should addresss the fact that you send "mixed messages" in this modern world.....where people don't SPEAK to each other - they only text, for example (one can't hear the emotion in the other's voice to know whether they are "happy", "disappointed", etc.). EVERYTHING that you post online sends a msg too.
I don't know that I necessarily "misread".....I think you "mis-signaled".
Sorry for the confusion.
I guess I should "Unrec"??? lol

But I was given "mixed messages".
I'm sure that I can't be the only one trying to navigate in "this modern world" where our senses of listening to nuances in our voices to tone/texture, body language, etc. "un-spoken LANGUAGE" that gives us clues to others thoughts/feelings....the things that make us HUMAN are being TOTALLY DISREGARDED.
edit to add: b/c we TEXT MSG and e-mail and we DON'T LISTEN to each other. We only 'talk' thru text/letters. With telephony we could actually LISTEN to each other. Now we have gone "backwards" to something like sending telegrams (that basically what text msgs are, aren't they?.....telegrams that only send the msg, but not the "heart". Text-msg'g ISN'T PROGRESS.

3. FFS! There was nothing WRONG with the Greatest Page |
|
People are confusing highly recommended threads with high-activity threads.
We Need SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE Now! 5 responses 10,000,000,889 recs
MICHAEL JACKSON DIDN'T BOINK THOSE KIDS 10,000,000,889 responses 2 recs
Get it?

The Greatest thread was full of posts like "K&R if you think Rush Limpballs should be off Armed Services Radio", "Cindy Sheehan is the greatest patriot alive!!!", "Obama is a traitor!", and "Israel is the source of all problems in the Middle East".
Recs used to be a one way street. Now, there is some balance.

If a bunch of DUers agreed that "Rush Limpballs should be off Armed Services Radio", then the recs reflected that.
How was that a problem?

12. Do truisms really merit to be called "Greatest"? |
|
There are a lot of threads that make it on to the Greatest page that are nothing more than threads designed to make it on the Greatest page. Little actual content, but designed to get recs.
With the old system, I could post a thread about any divisive figure or topic and it would be destined for the Greatest page simply for the fact that I was guaranteed to get at least 5 people to rec it. All I would have to do it post it in a way that pitted one group against the other. With the new system, people actually have some way to combat that.

17. Withthe old system you'd never know what the majority of DUers think. |
|
It was a one way street. Now, for something like the Rush Limbaugh example it might not hold up. But, for someone like Cindy Sheehan or Cynthia McKinney, where DU is divided into two distinct camps, it only allowed supporters a vote. It didn't take much for a thread 50% of DU disagreed with to make it easily to the Greatest page.

19. Then it was incumbent on the dissenters to start a dissenting thread |
|
No? Then this mythical 50% could 'balance' the Greatest page.
The uncomfortable fact is a large majority of DUers are pretty far left on the political spectrum.
The Democratic Party, not so much.

20. No, it would be incumbent on the other 50% to respond in the original thread. |
|
Why would they need to make a similar thread giving their spin? DU is a forum for discussion afterall, not for making the Greatest page.
The new rec system allows a chance for actual consensus on what is the "Greatest".

Evidently this is a very difficult concept for some to grasp.
