JUST 3 - First Term Quitters Hall of Fame
First Term Quitters Hall of Fame
9 07 2009

A number crunching Mudflatter sent the following:

On a hunch, I reviewed online lists of all the men and women who’ve been elected governor of their state since the year 1900. Pored over them for a few hours. Over 1200 politicians have taken that first-term oath of office. Some soon died in office. Many resigned to accept other positions in government, including Spiro Agnew who was “tapped” by Nixon after being the Governor of Maryland for about five minutes. On a handful of occasions, a first-termer was dragged off to the slammer or impeached. One was incapacitated by a nervous breakdown and one left just as impeachment came knocking on his door. So—how many out of over 1200 just up and quit before the end of their term?

Three: Jim McGreevy, Eliot Spitzer and Sarah Palin.

6. One of the happiest days of my life - let us relive it

even at 12 years old I hated Nixon with a passion. I thought he was finally gone from our lives forever.
I read in a book back in the 70s (Nixon Agonistes I think it was) that our hero had been drinking all night and was severely hung over by the time he showed up for his last presser. Obviously he hadn't shaved and was spoiling for a fight.

10. I also thought he was gone for good
But it wasn't enough to make up for Eleanor Roosevelt having just died. I was feeling pretty glum that day and even the thought that Tricky Dick was finally gone didn't help much.

7. I smell Sitcom!
What a wacky group!
They've all got their reasons!
They quit being governors,
in less than sixteen seasons!

One's a closetted gay,
who cheated on his wife!
But what can he say?
How complicated is his life?!

Another case of adultery
but this time with a whore.
He looks kind-of vulture-y.
Four diamonds or more!

And finally Sarah!
No one really knows why.
No one really cares, yah!
Dear god, why won't she die?!

They're the Ex-Gov'ners...
Their critics all hate...
But we hope you'll love'em...
Tune in Thursdays at Eight!

"I quit on my National Guard service, I quit on 9/11, and I quit on Hurricane Katrina. That's some exceptional quititude -- even for a Republicon. Smirk."
