I think it's important to know how deeply entrenched racism is in the republican party. I am from a predominantly Christian, conservative, republican family, and I am continuously shocked at the racist jargon that comes out of their mouths (and they are in CA, not the deep South). I think that the election of Obama is bringing this simmering hatred to the surface, and unpleasant as it is, I am hoping that we as a nation will finally address the issue.

58. I am only basing this on family members in the South, who have had various issues--

Some of my less conservative family members live in the South and here are just two events that stick out in my mind:

1. My brother-in-law coached little league and he put several African American boys on the team and he had bricks thrown threw his windows at his house, his car was vandalized, and the games were boycotted. This was a few years ago just outside Little Rock, AR.

2. My step sister was part of a group who was registering voters outside of a mall. It was supposed to be non-partisan, but she was told by the person in charge not to approach African Americans or Hispanics in order to register them. She was strongly cautioned not to register women. This was also in AR.

There are more incidents like this. They both grew up in CA and were absolutely shocked at the level of racism in Arkansas and they are relatively conservative, though not fanatics. I understand what you are saying about racism being everywhere. You are right. This is just my indirect experience through family members.
