Simple solution...Make a "Worst of" page... |
|
Now all your horrible unrecommended posts will still be visible. :P

4. I would prefer a "Hottest Topics" page. |
|
I'd like a hottest topics page--one that ranks threads by the highest sum of recommends and unrecommends. That would display threads that were rich in controversy and discussion, ideas that push people's buttons (the ones that are actually worthy of discussion).
Such a page would make me completely happy (if there were a nice little icon to it at the top of the forum) and then the Greatest Page could be a nice, happy liberal news feed (as it is, evidently, intended to be).

10. the flame icon appears whenever a thread has 50 posts |
|
I think it would be interesting to see the threads that are getting a lot of recs and unrecs, even if they don't reach the 5 net recs required to reach the greatest page.

11. No. The flame doesn't rank the threads at all. |
|
I'd like a page where the DU threads with the most total recommends and unrecommends are ranked, top to bottom, highest to lowest. The flames don't do that.
Does that make sense?

Personally I think threads that were rich in controversy and discussion, ideas that push people's buttons (the ones that are actually worthy of discussion) are the threads that people are acutally discussing.
An article with no replies except 10 kicks and 50 recommends is by definition, not rich in controversy and discussion.

6. Split it down the middle. The Greatest threads will be on one side. |
|
The "Shittiest" threads will, of course, be on the right.

7. Five unrecs and it gets to the "worst page." That would work |
|

for me. Might keep people from "unrecing" just for the hell of it. If it drops below -5 then it disappears would be a good idea, too.

13. or: if it drops below -10 the person who posted the OP gets tombstoned |
|
Just kidding. I don't think disappearing threads--or posters--based on unrecs is a good idea.

15. I meant it disappears from the worst page, not the site, |
|
just like threads that drop below 5 disappear from the greatest page.

I was thrown off by the "drops below -5," but now I see your meaning :hi:

12. Rather than a "worst," I'd like to see a "most voted on" |

I think that would be interesting.

14. Easier still, get rid of the Greatest Page. |
|
DU worked just fine without it for years.
Or at least change the name to "Most Recommended" and lose the implied superiority of the word 'greatest'.
I have DU bookmarked to open on the Discussion page, so I rarely, if ever, even look at the Greatest page. I don't need other folks to tell me what they think is hot - I certainly don't need them to tell me what they think is not.
