If Unrec is "only about the Greatest Page", hide the recs column...
or at least remove "<0" and simply mark a negative count as 0.

1. Marking the col as 0 when it's not 0 makes no sense - it's just false.

5. Not really. The user "Unrecommends". If there are no "Recommends" to begin with....
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 01:49 PM by Junkdrawer
how can the thread be "unrecommended"?

10. I'll let the rule violation slide....No, I think "Unrecommend" is being used as a euphemism...
If you allow <0, then Rate Up/Rate Down would be more honest.

2. It's a bit rude to tell a writer their OP is "less than zero."
I agree with you here. :)

4. That is rather insulting ~~ and I can see where there are DUers who...
...will hesitate to post an OP because of this.

How sad...

9. Blind justice
Article will get boosted to Greatest because readers felt they should be recommended.

Readers who feel the article has no merit, will un recommend.

Get enough positive and the thread goes gold. But no one needs to know that it has 4 recs and if I give it a fifth it goes over the top.

And we sure as hell don't need flame wars because certain people unrecommended others threads. The flame wars here can get bad enough as it is.

BTW: I post relatively few Original Posts. 1/week would be my average on the generous side, so the rec/unrec thing really isn't going to effect me too much.

11. I guarantee you if the negative count shows up simply as 0 instead of...
<0, there will be multiple posts about how their rec is being suppressed because it is not showing up. With the <0, it makes it clear there are more unrecommends than recommends without showing the difference which mitigates any embarrassment the OP poster might feel.

13. exactly. I liket his format. it's fair.
it's obvious the admins put some thought into it and then made on the fly adjustments when they saw issues with certain areas of their deployment.

14. Then the count should only go to zero. If you "Unrecommend" a post with no "Recommends"..
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 02:09 PM by Junkdrawer
then you should get a "You cannot unrecommend a post with no recommendations" error page. Or, better yet, hide "Unrecommend" for posts with no recommendations.

16. I have no problem with your suggestion to...
"hide Unrecommend for post with no recommendations", it might be a way in making it more tenable for those who fear the misuse of the option as it currently exists.

Not being an IT person, I don't know how much work this suggested change might engender versus leaving it as it is currently.

19. I really, really like the concept of "Less than Zero"
There were certain posters operating as a mutual fan club, posting blatantly false stories about the Democratic administration -- not constructively critical but pure fiction -- and rec'ing each other's garbage to the GP.

Now they know that the majority of DU thinks of them as "less than zeros". That's a positive development.
