I don't care a bit about the Unrecommend but I can think of a small change I'd like
Rather than show the Recommends minus the Unrecommends as the current score why not simply report both, how many have recommended it and how many not, something like this:

+6/-2

1. Then there will be endless complaining about "the herd" when someone's post is voted down.
A simple total is all it needs to be.

3. I think monitors should have a 1-in-1000 chance of exploding any time anyone recs/unrecs anything
Problem eventually and entertainingly solved.

18. Don't forget to send the message, "Eat flaming death!" right before the explosion.
Of course, this would unfairly favor DUers with fast reaction times, so I'm sure someone will object to the idea within seconds.

8. I like the idea of sending a small, non-lethal (low-amperage) 25,000 volt charge
right back down the Intertubes to the individual's keyboard and thence to their naughty fingertips. Just a teaspoon of taser or so. Just a little tingler. We already have the appropriate icon to use as a button --.

I don't know how we'd deal with the  posts, since appropriate USB-powered suctioning and torsioning devices haven't been invented yet. I'm working on it.

So, I'm sure they're not considering this.

10. I would agree but for one thing...
Some posters will demand that DU mods and admins out those who unrec'd their threads.

A thread was posted about Andy yesterday, and the author literally demanded that the mods and admins do just that.

11. That would be great, but you'd have world class whining if that happened.
Imagine how loudly they'd howl if, instead of the current mild rebuke, they got to see a vote like +12/-423.

14. I think it should cost money
people should have to buy unrec's - how about 25 un-recommends for $25.00. :sarcasm:

And I don't care about them, they neither enhance or diminish my experience here.

22. Only secret candy hearts cost money on DU. Anonymous
vindictiveness OTOH is free the other 51 weeks and now an apparently much prized commodity. But only if the number of negative hits are kept secret. We're not the self-regarding Underground here for nothing, you know.

15. When did this start?
I noticed it mentioned in the Poll on the Greatest Page thread, that was first I had heard. Who decided DU needed an "unrecommend" function? I feel like it will be used as a troll toy. It appears to be a way to censer stories from the greatest page, that others may want to get out. I don't understand any useful purpose the function has.

But might as well show both, it seams more like a transparent vote count. And why not show who is recommending and unrecommending as well...

of process then let's see the whole larger perspective. Let's see the honest reality. Why the semi-obscured shades of it?

19. Don't really need the plus and minus signs. Just put the recommend first.
That way, anyone who needs to be in denial about the consensus opinion of their OP can pretend the order is unrecommend/recommend instead of the other way around. :P

24. Tender feelings?
I don't have a real answer for you. However, it was designed at first in a fashion where one could tell how many positive vs. negative votes a post had. Which was somewhat quickly dropped. I assumed it was due to the almost immediate competition to see who could have the most negatively rated post which ensued. However, that's simply an assumption on my part.
