Zelaya Deal to Return to Honduras Close, UN Assembly Chief Says

July 10 (Bloomberg) -- The former Nicaraguan foreign minister serving as president of the United Nations General Assembly said he’s been told an agreement to reinstate Manuel Zelaya as president of Honduras is “very close.”

Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, who was on the plane with Zelaya July 5 when they were blocked from landing at the airport in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, said he’s been in “constant communication” with officials involved in talks aimed at resolving the crisis, which began last month.

An accord to return Zelaya to the presidency will come in “a very few days,” he said at a news conference at the UN.

“I have a feeling we are moving in that direction very quickly,” D’Escoto Brockmann said of the negotiations being led by former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.

D’Escoto Brockmann said that after Arias failed yesterday to persuade interim leader Roberto Micheletti and Zelaya to meet face-to-face, “something else happened that leads me to believe there will be a solution.” He declined to go into further detail about what happened, or to characterize his sources. ...........(more)
