Brewery Draws Ire for Naming Beers After Exits
Brewery Draws Ire for Naming Beers After Exits

CHERRY HILL, NJ (AP) -- A small brewery has found inspiration on the New Jersey Turnpike -- and anti-drunken-driving crusaders say that's a bad idea.

Cherry Hill-based Flying Fish Brewing Co. has started releasing beers that honor the congested and often-derided thoroughfare. The second one to be released honors Exit 11 and will be on store shelves in the region later this month.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority objected, saying the beers make it seem like the government body is endorsing the beer. The authority has backed off its complaints since the brewer started using a disclaimer to be clear that there's no official link between the road and the brew.

Brewery founder Gene Muller said it's all in fun and that the craft brewer opposes drinking and driving.

9. I'd rather see off ramps named after beers than after some guy I've never heard of.
You're driving along I95 and there a sign, that you paid for, that says, "The Arnold Peapicker Overpass". If I don't know who he is, he's not famous enough to name something after him. Name a pothole for Arnold Peapicker, name the overpass for Zsa Zsa Gabor.

4. They should name them after the various service areas
What self-respecting New Jerseyan wouldn't want to hoist a Joyce Kilmer, a Vince Lombardi, or best of all, a Molly Pitcher?!

At least that was the best submission. Tourism pols in Trenton went for something spineless.

15. Oh, I think there were other good ones
New Jersey - Not all our politicians are crooked.
New Jersey - It doesn't all smell like Bayonne.

Is NJ the only place where people define themselves by where they live relative to the Turnpike? Where d'you live? Exit 10. Everywhere else it's used as part of directions to one's house, not as the location of that house. What's pretty funny is that most non-New Jerseyite's (including mine) knowledge of the state is limited to the turnpike's rest stops. AGain, is it like that anywhere else?

16. NJ is the only word(s) I associate with "turnpike"
Oh, I have a dim awareness they probably exist elsewhere, but if you say "turnpike", I reflexively say "New Jersey!"

17. Great Marketing Idea
This story is being talked about on several message boards. This beer will become nationally known. It's pretty good beer. I knew this guy back in the 1990's before he got into the beer business. Best wishes to Gene!

19. I have no idea what exit number I use to get home. It used to be 27, but then they renamed them
...because they hadn't wasted enough money on signage that year, one presumes.

25. Well, there you go - a new motto for Bayonne
Bayonne - We don't smell as bad as Elizabeth. I think that's what I meant in the first place. When I was a kid growing up in NYC, we used to visit relatives in NJ. And, as a kid, I kind of timed the trip based on various key points along the way: The Verazzano Bridge (I think), the dump on Staten Island, and Elizabeth. The rest of it was just a blur - it was the suburbs, which meant it wasn't the city, so who cared.

Of course, the mad mothers will be here in 3...2...1... to deride anything with alcohol in it, demand that the drinking age be raised to 65, and that the death penalty be imposed for having a BAC higher than 0.02...
