Jim Moran: “The Votes Are Not There” For Public Option
By: Jane Hamsher Friday July 10, 2009 1:49 pm

Marjorie W. reports:

The aide who answered the phone said Rep. Moran is in favor of the public option, but knows that the votes for it are not there, and wants to get something through rather than have the whole reform package voted down.

We're trying to confirm with Moran's office right now. But this is why "support for a public option" is just weasel words if they won't vote against a bill that doesn't have one -- in the end, they'll all vote for some shitty insurance industry bail out just to "pass something."

Moran's offices: DC 202-225-4376, VA 703-971-4700

Update: Moran's office called back, and says Moran is opposed to a public plan until someone can tell him how we're going to pay for it. Moran voted for TARP I, TARP II, the $108 billion bailout of European banks and supplemental war funding and never asked how we were going to pay for it. Sounds like a guy who sucked down $187 grand from lobbyists & lawyers last election cycle is looking for an excuse to book.

16. Seriously. I may no longer vote. What's the point, if it doesn't matter?
This is notice to everyone in politics and government. If we don't get a public option, then it's time for me to realize that this whole idea of our voting and contributing making a difference is BULLSHIT.

I will never vote Republican, but how can I vote Democrat if we can't get this? You can break the fillibuster, and the public option only needs 51 votes.

Stop the "compromises". Not a single Republican will ever, *EVER* vote for this bill. You're not going to get their votes. We don't need their votes.

Single payer or I'm going to stop acting like caring makes a difference.

7. Every single Democrat who votes against a public option needs to be targeted
and NO money should go into their coffers from the party.

9. There never is enough votes for anything progressive
and never enough votes to uphold the law of the land no matter how many Democrats are elected to office or how few Republicans.

10. Getting "something through" is not better than nothing.
Getting it right, even if it's not this week is better than pushing through some bullshit that actually is going to bankrupt the nation because it take the premiums away from the insurance companies.

13. I despise this guy
He doesn't even acknowledge constituent letters. He's an ironclad reliable vote for whatever Goldman Sachs wants.
