This Too Shall Pass
Every so often, DU erupts into a shitstorm over some percieved slight concerning one group or another. This latest storm, re: unrecommend, was started by a group of people who rightly or wrongly think that it's stifling in some way. I would posit that there is a large group of DU'ers who like to twist noses and I'll admit to being one of that group on occasion. There is no reason for alarm though. The aforementioned group will soon move onto other things to twist noses over. The group who concerns themselves with how many recs their posts get will soon find that things have returned to normal, or at least what is normal for them. Their posts will soon begin to rise to the top of the Greatest Page just as they did before. The DU attention span isn't altogether different from that of non-DU reading Americans.

It's not going to stifle anything, and if one looks closely, it's already working itself out. Look at the forum listing and you'll find less and less <0 threads. This is happening after only one day. In three days, the only threads with <0 ratings will be those which absolutely deserve them. And we, as a group, will have already moved on to what is the outrage/poutrage du jour.

To those whose highest aspiration is to have each and every one of their threads appear on the Greatest Page, I speak these words: This too shall pass, and you shall regain your status as one who must be read.

1. When a post gets a "U" within a few seconds
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 11:17 PM by question everything
with less than 10 views - a post which is not about a hot topic - you know that there are some who are here to settle scores. They don't bother to read the post, they will just give a U because they feel like it.

And, of course, will do this anonymously. I think that if one does not like a post, one should have the guts to explain why.

P.S., this "less than zero" did not come from me.

2. LOL that's okay. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don't, but I'd never click unrec unless
I thought your post deserved it beyond question. I absolutely respect your opinions even though I don't always agree with them.

I'm nobody's favorite poster here, and it matters to me not. I've been banned due to the collective efforts of certain DU'ers and lived to post another day after explaining to Skinner what happened. I'd expect to have each and every post from here on out to have a <0 rating, just because DU'ers can. Again, it matters to me not.

I still support the unrec upgrade, and will continue to do so. It's not me it will cut down to size, but a whole group of DU'ers who've come to think of themselves as the deserving elite.

I laugh at their hatred.

3. A couple of folks here told me they were going to unrec every thread
because they were angry about the rule change.

Silly of them. No lives, I guess. They'll get tired of it eventually, I imagine.

4. Juvenile, really
I used to be very judicious with my recommendations. I certainly stayed away with the demands, in ALL CAP: RECOMMEND THIS THREAD, etc.

But now I do spend some time and when I see "less than zero" and posts which really do not deserve this, I go and recommend them and, in some cases, at least put them in the zero category. I guess this is my way of protesting.
