Suicidal Nicaraguan Mayor was an all-time great

THE Mayor of Managua, capital of Nicaragua, committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart last week.

It plunged the five million citizens of the Central American republic into deep mourning as his body lay in state in an open coffin at the National Palace.

Except for the most avid British fight fans, his death barely registered here.

Yet Alexis Arguello the politician was also one of the 20th century’s all-time great champions, who held titles at featherweight, super-featherweight and lightweight.

The news of his tragic end came as big a shock to the boxing fraternity as the passing of Michael Jackson has had on the entertainment industry.
