I have a Pontiac Vibe from 2004 that I just love.. and I want another one. I get 40MPG on the highway. It is better than what was listed. Just a honey of a car.

This will probably be the last Pontiac I will be able to buy. Going to take really good care of a future classic :)

But we have been having an uptick in sales locally, and even jobs. I do not know what is going on in the rest of the country..but things are settling out here in western Iowa.

Hoping this is the start of ripples out to the rest of the country from the heartland.

There is no particular angst in this thread, just a feeling of turning the corner I wanted to share.

5. American cars are great.. people just got stuck in the 80's
frame of thought, when the vehicles were not the best. And the American auto makers never really sold their great products.

3. Isn't GM ditching Pontiac? How will that impact future replacement parts and trade-in value?
My local Ford dealer (not from that hecker piece of filth, but the real Ford dealer) there were people everywhere and rather a few sales being made too.

8. If you feel you absolutly "have to" buy a car "today" then you're in trouble right from the outset
No warning? Take your time, you'll be better off for it.

9. The Poncho website mentions 0% financing for 60 months on selected 2009 models
Check the website and call you locals dealers. 0% financing rocks.

12. Before you buy, check out this website.
Edmunds

You can determine what the dealer's cost is and that's powerful information. Don't let them bargain from the sticker price down. And even if a dealer sells a car for only what they have in it, they make money due to factory holdbacks, which are explained at the website. You can also learn what rebates are in effect.

Print out the information and take it with you. Sales people stop trying to hustle you when they see you have it.

There are other websites where you can get this kind of information but this one is my favorite.

13. The last American car I had was an Olds - I really liked it.
It was a 1988 Touring Sedan, a limited production hot shit version of their top sedan with leather/wood, Bose, rack and pinion and some sort of special suspenstio system.
I used it on the shitty ride to and from work and it made the drive enjoyable. GREAT ride, handled very well.
Sold it when I retired.
The car first learned to drive on was a '54 Olds - probably never drive another one.

14. You realize that the Vibe is a rebadged Toyota Matrix. It's...
assembled in California in the joint venture plant, but it's still a Toyota with a few Pontiac tricks.

15. Matrix and Vibe are the same vehicle
But the Toyota Matrix is assembled in Canada.

GM is pulling out of the NUMMI plant in California, and Toyota may walk away from it.

17. Thank you for thinking of your fellow Americans.
I live in the Detroit area and lost my job last week.

I know your buying one car won't solve our problems but at least you are part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Thank you.

18. Bob I used to drive a Cavalier.. and it saved my life in a car accident
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 11:28 AM by Peacetrain
I love my American cars.. when someone hit me, the Cav.. accordioned, and literally absorbed so much of the shock, that I was able to walk away from the accident with minimal injuries. I was hit by an SUV and both vehicles completely totaled..

Let me edit to add.. I have been fighting the knee jerk assumptions about American autos for years now. People get an attitude stuck in their heads and dang it is like concrete..
