3. Absolutely
Unless there's some sort of a joke here that's going over my head, why not? One needs to know people from all sides of life. Besides, how are they going to learn anything if they don't have me to advocate for my side of things?

28. As long as we stay off politics, we're cool.
We can talk about baseball, music, movies, whatever. If politics comes up everyone walks away pissed.

39. Same here...no politics, and no
religion.

Which some of them are apt to bring up, in a mighty (but somewhat futile) effort to Convert The Godless.

:scared:

Otherwise, we can sit and have some pretty interesting chats

:)

40. why?
i have repub friends from several religions. one of my repub friends is an atheist. a pro-life atheist. it's pretty frigging iconoclastic. i think life would be really boring if we surrounded ourselves only with people who think the exact same things, politically. i just people by their character, not their politics.

and some in this group voted for Obama. Others are hopeless but I am not throwing them under the bus because we have political differences. Life is too short.

10. just my 87 year-old Aunt Betty -- as far as Americans are concerned
I can hardly ditch my 87 year-old Aunt who used to take me on trips when I was a little kid.

When it comes to Europeans or Middle or Far Easterners - some of my good friends are conservatives - I am able to separate emotionally in those cases. American conservatives tend to be - for the most part, with some exceptions, more extreme and less rational than conservatives from the United States.

I have found also that some conservatives on a personal level are kindly, compassionate and tolerant enough and some people on the left are not.

33. I've found the opposite - kindly compassionate and tolerant
people on the liberal/left, democratic side. Have not encounterd that with my repub friends. I think there is a personality that is attracted to the mindeset that is repub (and the same holds true for dems). That personality tends to be more ridged. It's why they always make jokes about "hearding cats" when refering to democrats. Dems are open minded and tend to try (rightly or not) to look t different sides of the issues and be more tolerent of other view points. Just look at our congress, repubs are in lock step, dems are infighting. Personally, even though they are holding up progress, there is a part of me that is glad that we have the infighting and argument.

17. My Dad was a republican until 2008 but he voted for...
Democrats in the past and for Obama in November.

I have a really good friend who is a libertarian (more selfish/less warmongering version of repubs). I just pretend she has a mental problem when anything political comes up. She is a very generous and sweet person who loves animals and has been a good friend to me. I just nod and say "that's nice" until the conversation changes to something more innocuous.

I have to have a very good reason to overlook something so wrong in a person that I might want to get close to.

24. Only the ones I don't talk politics with - ever!

And that's a pretty rare occurrence - I can only think of one Republican friend that I still have, and we avoid major political discussions. But if it wasn't for the fact that we've known each other for over 30 years I wouldn't have that much restraint.

29. My husband's best friend is a Puglican...
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 12:58 PM by PassingFair
We haven't seen too much of him since
the election...we were at his liberal
brother-in-law's house on election night
and he and his wife left early because
they couldn't bear the emotion and they
knew it was not a good night to pick a
fight.

The only time he calls my husband is when
he needs something. :eyes:

He and his wife are anti-union, anti National
Health care and bigots.

Oh, and they BOTH work for the city, have
a union, with benefits and PENSIONS and his
wife's brother is married to a black woman.
And the wife's other brother (the liberal) is gay
and has a black partner.

I put up with my husband's friend because I
LOVE his brother-in-law.

34. We should recognize, and even embrace, the differences
between Republicans and right-wing asswrenches.

Yes, I have Republican friends. One or two are close friends. We occasionally talk politics, and, gee — they don't eat babies or smoke flags.

35. Some of the best people I know are Republicans, people who would stand by me
when I need help. I don't pick friends by politics and I don't judge people strictly by their politics. There are Republicans who are not good people, but there are people here with whom I would not want to spend 2 minutes with even though we politically agree.

36. Extremists of any stripe
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 02:27 PM by billh58
I don't associate with extremists on either end of the political spectrum. I believe that Middle Americans, whether Republican or Democrat, are generally socially liberal, and fiscally conservative. The major differences of opinion between mainstream Republicans and Democrats are the size of government, and how much to spend on "social" programs.

A blog that I have participated in for years, and which was once a mainstream, Liberal Democratic community has, since the elections, become a haven for Far-Left extremists, who IMHO are just as bad, or worse, than the neocon extremists.

I have been a "lurker" on DU for several years, but because I was a moderator on another Democratic site I have not had the time to participate here. That may soon be changing.
