If you want more feedback on a subject you have to post the
same thread in all the Big forums, otherwise the thread might never be read by people who mainly read just one forum.

5. I don't read forum specifically, I just click on Latest Discussion Threads.
If I start a thread I start it in what I believe to be the most appropriate forum.

6. I rarely use the Latest discussion thread...
you have to scan through several pages to catch up on the prior day, the latest/greatest combo has about one day on on page.

If you look at the current "latest page" there is only about one hour of posts, several of which I would have no interest in reading and I do not want to scan through 12 pages to catch up.

In contrast the left side of the greatest page has the last day or so of threads that at least 5 people thought should get a rec, much easier to look through and also to pick up at a later point as they remained in the same order instead of dropping on and off.

This is how I used the left side of GP before the change

7. To be honest, I have no interest in keeping up with every current thread on DU.
That is way more work than I want to do. I'll stick with the Latest Discussion Threads where I may look at the first couple of pages.

9. We all use things in a different manner, for me the latest thread
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 05:01 PM by slipslidingaway
is every thought someone wants to post, sorting through pages to find the more important news/topics takes longer.

You might have to sort through 24 pages to see the last day!

I wish that I could stick with the latest/greatest page, but the unrec feature has greatly diminished its usefulness with topics appearing and disappearing.

10. If a post truly deserves to be on the Greatest Page, then the Recs will outnumber the UnRecs.
There just may not be as many with many Recs in the 80s, 90s, or more. Thread with less than 20 Recs are probably going to drop fast anyways. Plus, the "Rec Me" threads get annoying. The cream will ultimately rise to the top.

I don't think there are an overwhelming number of stories that are actually new. Even on the first 2 or 3 pages there are likely to be a lot of reposts. So I read the Front Page and the first couple of the Latest just to get the gist of what is happening now.

12. But the time sequence is lost, unless you used the left side of GP in the
manner I described it is probably no big deal, but that was the most efficient use that I found, I did not look at the right side very much.

the left side...

which Was a combination of the latest/greatest threads from any forum (that you could rec) placed in chronological order of when they hit the GP.

You could come back the next day or hours later and easily scan through the left side for the latest/greatest of the past several hours and then pick up where you left off from your last visit. If time allowed then you could visit other forums, but this was a quick and efficient use of the left side of the GP...IMHO.

15. Doh! You're determined to find something wrong, aren't you.
The long and short of it is that there is not one perfect way for everyone and any change is bound to upset some people. Life is full of change, we just have to all roll with the punches.

16. I was trying to explain what I thought was a very efficient use
of the DU GP that has now been lost with the unrec feature, not trying to find something wrong.

I rarely use the latest page or the front page, the greatest/latest was my first stop.

If you have never used it that way, it might be difficult for you to grasp the change.

That is all.

18. I perfectly happy with how I use DU and I have no motivation to change.
It has nothing to do with efficiency because I am not concerned with efficiency. I read DU for pleasure and enjoyment, not efficiency. I simply like using DU the way that I have used it for years and the latest changes have not altered that at all. One good thing now is that you can Rec a thread without ever leaving it and having to go back.

19. I'm not suggesting that anyone change, just understand what was lost
to some people without accusing them of just trying to find fault.

I like the way I used it for years as well, but that is no longer available.

17. Bring back the Latest/Greatest Combo with a time sequence
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 07:07 PM by slipslidingaway
explanation of why I started this thread. If you never used the left side of the GP, then it is no big deal, some of used it as the first stop.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6041515&mesg_id=6041515

From another thread and I've copied and pasted this a few times in a thread that had 5 recs, but then it is dropped from the GP, it just gets stuck in a loop on the same forum.

Posted this a few times, this is how I used the GP and I would start a new post about it, but it would get rec'ed and unrec'ed and most likely never make it to the left side of the GP, where people from different forums might see it and comment.

Bring back the Latest/Greatest Combo with a time sequence.

I disagree, the left side of the GP was very useful, not so much anymore. Posted this in another thread, although I realize that we all may not use this method, the latest/greatest combo was an efficient tool IMHO.

I do not use the right side of the GP as much as the left side...

which Was a combination of the latest/greatest threads from any forum (that you could rec) placed in chronological order of when they hit the GP.

You could come back the next day or hours later and easily scan through the left side for the latest/greatest of the past several hours and then pick up where you left off from your last visit. If time allowed then you could visit other forums, but this was a quick and efficient use of the left side of the GP...IMHO.

What happens now is a thread might get 5 recs and be placed on the left side of the GP, then someone gives it an unrec, so it drops off the left side, a couple hours later it gets another rec and gets placed back on the left side, BUT it remains where it was placed earlier when it first hit the GP left side.

The right side of the GP does not change nearly as fast so it was not as useful, the left side is pretty much destroyed with threads dropping on and off as people rec and unrec. I can see why they are not placed at the top again as this could happen several times a day, so that would not help the functionality either.

Hope that makes sense, it was the best way to see a combination of the latest/greatest from all forums.
