Does the job "Multiplier Effect" eventually become the "Divider Effect"?

I've seen the term "Multiplier Effect" applied in different ways: banks create (multiply) money through loans; conventions and other large events ultimately bring in more money to an area than the ticket sales and restaurant receipts. I have read somewhere that manufacturing jobs have a multiplier effect - that is, they create between 2 and 5 other jobs in the local economy. Hi-tech and professional positions likely create even more than that.

My question for the financial wizards is: are we possibly headed for an upwards 'knee' in the unemployment curve because of the steadily diminishing returns/multipliers due to the loss of manufacturing, hi-tech, and other good paying jobs?
