Eat Local America! Challenge 2009 |
|
Deep Roots Market, along with 50 other food co-ops nationwide, challenges area residents to put their money where their mouths and producers are and help stimulate local economic growth by taking the second, national Eat Local, America! challenge through the month of July. Those wishing to participate simply sign a large poster at Deep Roots Market or register online at www.eatlocalamerica.coop to show their commitment to eat local food for the duration of the challenge. Seasoned locavores are encouraged to commit to eating four out of five meals with local food roughly 80 percent of their diets. Those who are just starting out the local newbies are urged to begin by eating at least one meal a week made with local foods. Need a jumpstart and some recipes? Visit the co-op! Happy munching!
I know not everyone will be able to do this but if you have access to your local food co-op, and the money, this is a great way to support local business and eat healthier at the same time. I hope some of you will be able to join in this challenge with me.

1. Great post! I'm way into the local food scene- which is becoming the backbone of my town |
|
I do the cooking for my friend's little tea room/garden. Today we served a vegetarian salad nicoise made largely from local produce, a cheese and fruit plate with local cheeses and berries, a chard, potato and bayley-hazen blue cheese tart and a strawberry tart with local berries. I incorporate local and organic food into the menu as much as I can. I love featuring our fantastic local cheeses and produce, tofu made here in town from beans grown here, and lots and lots of herbs from our huge herb garden.

Or die of malnutrition. Las Vegas doesn't have a lot of locally grown/raised foods.
Milk. There is one small commercial farm/bird sanctuary (Gilcrease Orchard) . . .
