GOP, tax groups criticize tax on rich

Republicans and tax groups are pushing back hard against the Democratic plan to fund a trillion-dollar healthcare overhaul bill by taxing wealthy Americans.

The opposition comes in response to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel’s (D-N.Y.) announcement on Friday that the House next week will propose raising taxes on couples earning more than $350,000 a year to help pay $540 billion of the costs for healthcare reform.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said the move could aversely affect small-businesses, since some business owners file tax returns with their professional income listed as their personal income.

“With unemployment nearing double digits nationwide, the last thing we need is a massive tax hike that will punish small businesses and cost even more American jobs,” Boehner said in a statement released Saturday.

Rangel outlined a proposal Friday that would impose surtax rates ranging from 1 percent to 3 percent on couples with annual earnings of $350,000, $500,000 and $1 million. Surtaxes are calculated by adding the relevant percentage to workers’ regular yearly tax bill.

8. And what percentage of the people Boehner is talking about are . . .
uh, doctors?

In my opinion, those would be the bulk of small business owners, filing as persons, who make over $350K/year.

So give a little back, boys and girls.

11. I'll bet that it would be hard to find
any small business owners claiming over 350k after deductions and not incorporated with a LLC. Seems they could spend 3 or 4 hundred on a CPA.

12. Well even if they are in an LLC
it could still be a single member LLC and as such, a non-entity for tax purposes.
