US attorney general mulls appointing 'torture prosecutor'Agence France Presse US Attorney General Eric Holder is mulling appointing a criminal prosecutor to probe if CIA personnel tortured terrorism suspects after the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to a newspaper.
Citing three unnamed sources close to the matter, The Washington Post said such a move could set the stage for a conflict with officials in President Barack Obama's administration who want to leave these issues in the past.
Top Obama aides have expressed concern that such an investigation might trigger partisan debates that could overtake Obama's ambitious legislative agenda, the report said.
So far, the White House has resisted efforts by some congressional Democrats to establish a "truth and reconciliation" panel, but Holder has recently reviewed new disclosures about detainee mistreatment. ........(more)
