US attorney general mulls appointing 'torture prosecutor'
Agence France Presse

US Attorney General Eric Holder is mulling appointing a criminal prosecutor to probe if CIA personnel tortured terrorism suspects after the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to a newspaper.

Citing three unnamed sources close to the matter, The Washington Post said such a move could set the stage for a conflict with officials in President Barack Obama's administration who want to leave these issues in the past.

Top Obama aides have expressed concern that such an investigation might trigger partisan debates that could overtake Obama's ambitious legislative agenda, the report said.

So far, the White House has resisted efforts by some congressional Democrats to establish a "truth and reconciliation" panel, but Holder has recently reviewed new disclosures about detainee mistreatment. ........(more)

2. Keep The Pressure On...
I think Holder knows his department isn't in any shape to handle an investigation on its own. He's still trying to fill out his staff (thanks to rushpublican holds on nominees) and is still cleaning out the Monica Goodlings and other partisan hacks who have wormed their way into the system.

Politics is a touchy problem here as the rushpublicans and their corporate media toadies are sure to claim any invetigation is a partisan witch hunt. The Obama administration is still stuck on trying to keep the politics down to pass other parts of the agenda, but the evidence is starting to pile up...smoke is pouring all around. The "bi-partisan" game hasn't worked and won't.

My hopes are that once things such as healthcare reform and Sotomayor's confirmation are passed and the ruse of "bipartisanship" will be trashed and the demand for accountability of the booosh regime begins. But it doesn't happen if we don't keep pressure on Congresscritters, Senators and this Administration. The moment we forget, so will they.
