*SCARY* 4 burned at tomato festival by funnel cake oil
I do NOT post this in any way as a joke. Just read this. Frightening.

Four injured at Hanover Tomato Festival
http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/TOMAGAT11_20090711-154201/279450/

Four workers at the Hanover Tomato Festival suffered burns today when a vat of hot cooking oil was tipped over.

A little after noon, a worker tripped where they were making funnel cakes, knocking over a vat of cooking oil that was between 350 and 425 degrees Fahrenheit. The worker and three other workers, all employees of the vendor, were burned by the oil.

Two victims were air-lifted to VCU Medical Center and the other two were taken by ambulance. The two more seriously injured were burned over 30 percent of their bodies. The other two had burns to their arms and legs.

1. Those setups have always struck me
as a disaster waiting to happen, but I'd never read of anything happening until today.

Eek, says I.

2. That's awful! but some dumb A apparently set the thing up wrong!
It's been many, many years since I've had anything to do with carnie vending etc. but anyone who worked with hot oil or any other product that dealt with potential danger what worned, and warned all the time about safety. The stability of vats of hot oil is paramount to anything else!

7. The fryers are no problem IF you take the necessary precautions.
EVERYTHING can be a disaster waiting to happen IF you don't at least TRY to be careful!

9. Hmmm...let's see...
My home, or a fried turkey...

I think I'll take my home.

I've seen horrific videos about when turkey fryers go bad. Houses have literally burned to the ground.

3. that is horrible
hopefully none of them will have permanent injuries.
I saw something similar happen to a cook changing deep fryer grease when I was a waitress at a 24hr joint years ago, if I remember he had to undergo months of skin grafts

6. Oh, I feel for them!
Those workers aren't paid much, and to have suffered those terrible injuries--burns like that take a long time to heal! My bet is they have no health insurance, either--so very very sad.

10. You know they don't.
They're the equivalent of carny workers. They follow festivals around and live by whatever they sell.

The story sickens me.

8. I was working at Chick-fil-a one day...
when the manager noticed that someone had let the deep frier run past the allotted cooking time. This cooker had a lid that was sealed by a clasp so it was under a lot of pressure. He got the employees out of the area and attempted to open the lid and as soon as he undid the clasp the lid blew off and as he turned his back to it it drenched his back with at least 400 degree oil. It took months for him to recover from those burns.

12. Corporate restaurants never think shutting down the line is an option.

One of my few serious burns was on a Denny's line on which the refrigeration was being repaired...while we cooked.

It was either my arm or the poor serviceperson's back.

They didn't want me to go to the hospital either, I think it was going to screw up the managerial bonuses.

...All chick-fil-a had to do was cool down the line...

I feel for that mamager you described.
