87.5% of "Family" & DLC Affiliated Senate Democrats Voted Yes on FISA

A surprising number of Family members and "friends" played key roles as founding members of the DLC in 1985 and the organization's political ideology shared, from the onset, much in common with Family ideology: so much so that a case can be made that the DLC has functioned to inject a secularized version of The Family's ideology--elitist, anti-New Deal, corporatist, militaristic, deeply hostile to church-state separation--into the Democratic Party and, in the process, paralyze the Democratic Party, tying it in knots with predictably ensuing inter-party ideological disputes.

The Family is only one among a number of secretive and cultic para-church organizations that worked, for decades, to burrow into Washington's power structures--recruiting, co-opting and even converting America's top leaders to reactionary, business and corporate friendly, elitist right-wing religious views. The Unification Church, Opus Dei and the welter of ministries operated by Bill Bright's sprawling Campus Crusade For Christ (one of which, "Christian Embassy", organizes prayer cells both on Capitol Hill and within the US Pentagon) each have considerable spheres of influence. But the Family is probably the most influential of all, especially for its pretense to bipartisanship, its central, institutionalized and quasi-governmental role in American national politics and civic religion.

Family doctrine, minimalist at best, emphasizes devotion to Jesus "plus nothing" but one might as well substitute "power" for "Jesus" and because The Family has amassed such a disturbing amount of power, or influence, it has made itself almost unavoidable - even for politicians who would prefer to avoid the group and its `prayer cells'. To get ahead, smart and aspiring politicians on both sides of the aisle will tend to court and pay obeisance to The Family and a heavily disproportionate number of the most prominent of the Democratic Party's emergent leaders have, over the past two decades, been associated with The Family, as "friends" of the Family or even as members, and have held Family-friendly political positions.

The DLC functions, in essence, as a secular adjunct to The Family - a public organizational body churning out White Papers and position papers, initiatives such as National Service and legislative proposals. It may never be possible to prove that the Democratic Leadership Council was created specifically in order to translate the Family's political agenda into legislation and to pull Democratic Party politics rightwards, but if that is not the case it might as well be. Both entities pull Democratic Party politicians rightward, towards similar ideological set points, by enticing Democratic Party politicians with, in the case of the DLC, big piles of corporate cash or, in the case of The Family, a huge, international covert influence peddling network which can establish or amplify political careers and grease the wheels towards business success.

In exchange for access to its corporate cash, the DLC demands Democrats adopt positions that might have placed them, two or three decades ago, about at, or close to, where moderate Republicans (a vanishing breed) are today but which, since the Democratic Party has slid rightwards since the 1970's, can still allow the to plausibly lay claim to being, doctrinally, democrats because democratic political positions have gradually been redefined - as a "lite" version of GOP positions. In marketing terms, this tends to place Democrats in an inherent disadvantage, as lesser or ersatz versions of the real thing or as wafflers without strong conviction.

39. Great idea - However, people have been talking about a "viable" third party for years in
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 07:20 PM by LaPera
both the democratic & republican party voters are unhappy with their paid off politicians (mostly in the Democratic Party)....but it never happens because the Dems & the repugs have stacked the deck to make it near impossible for a third party to compete...recently the Ross Perot had moderate success, Greens made a run at it, Libertarian party is a joke, the republican party in disguise, Independents have a few elected people...

But nothing of any major significance to scare the corporate paid off existing members of both the two party system....Both the dems & repukes have worked well over a hundred years to make sure a viable third party is near impossible to produce any long term threat in this country, they only allow third parties to exists because it looks good, as if a real democracy is in place.

It takes a lot of money to go up against well funded candidates in the two major parties, and the corporations like it just the way it is....Real, true, campaign finance reform could do it....but again the corporation & their lobbyist with gobs of money and in the end the paid off Democratic & Republican parties feel happy & secure about their jobs.

Disgusting isn't it?

It better NOT happen with the Public Option for Universal Health Care...there better be a Public Option!

45. You're right about the two parties stacking the deck...
But what if Dean's "You Have The Power" movement + Obama's "Yes, We Can" movement + the influx of new voters with the children of the boomers + the organizational/informational tools of the internet FINALLY added up to a new party that actually served the people and saved the planet!?

It's good to dream ~ if we can't name it, we can't claim it. (Can't recall who said that.)

3. I just read a bunch of articles on "The Family"...
...and my head is spinning.

It's difficult to know what is real, and what the truth is. However, one thing is certain. Our government
has been marching toward Fascism for a long while. After 9/11--through through the Patriot Act--our government
made law many Fascist tenants. We gave up privacy, we allowed our government to illegally spy on us, prevent
our travel with a secret list of 'bad people' who could not travel. We allowed Habeas Corpus to become a
distant memory, we gave extreme power to corporations over the health and safety of citizens. We allowed
torture and the installation of a prison that is located in an out-of-the-way location with little oversight.

A lot of this stuff---is evidence that there are powerful Fascists who are iteratively crafting a government
that is more to their liking---and is anti-democracy.

Our current state...is evidence that powerful forces are making this stuff happen.

The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power.

Jeff is a contributing editor to Harper's and Rolling Stone.

You can read about the book on his website: http://jeffsharlet.blogspot.com/

10. Here's the interview I heard on NPR's Fresh Air (also worth listening to):
Family': Fundamentalism, Friends In High Places

Fresh Air from WHYY, July 1, 2009 · In the book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, author Jeff Sharlet examines the power wielded by a secretive Christian group known as the Family, or the Fellowship.

Founded in 1935 in opposition to FDR's New Deal, the evangelical group's views on religion and politics are so singular that some other Christian-right organizations consider them heretical

The group also has a connection to a house in Washington, D.C., known as C Street. Owned by a foundation affiliated with the Family, C Street is officially registered as a church; in practice, it serves as a meeting place and residence for politicians like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.

The Family, Sharlet writes, is responsible for founding the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a supposedly ecumenical — but implicitly Christian — event attended by the president, members of Congress and dignitaries from around the world. These foreign delegations are often led by top defense personnel, who use it as an opportunity to lobby the most influential people in Washington — and who repay the Family with access to their governments.

The group's approach to religion, Sharlet says, is based on "a sort of trickle-down fundamentalism," which holds that the wealthy and powerful, if they "can get their hearts right with God ... will dispense blessings to those underneath them."

Members of the group ardently support free markets, in which, they believe, God's will operates directly through Adam Smith's "invisible hand."

15. Except for Wayne Madsen and the LaRouchies, it's probably all true
As a result of looking into Bush family history and related matters, I've come to several conclusions:

1) Support for fascism -- or at least for a kind of Americanized fascism-lite -- was extremely widespread among American business leaders in the 1930's. Some actively endorsed Nazi racial ideology or funded domestic fascist groups. Some merely looked to Germany for a model of a government that would overturn the New Deal and destroy the unions.

2) When the US entered World War II, a deal was struck with these near-traitorous corporations. They would help in the war effort and all would be forgiven. Then, following the war, there was a massive re-writing of history to conceal the inconvenient facts of what had gone before. In this sense, Orwell's 1984 wasn't prediction -- it was a straightforward description of what was happening as he wrote in 1948.

In this rewritten version of history, the Republicans' only fault in the 1930's had been excess devotion to Hooverian economics. They and the corporate elite had never been disloyal, never turned against democracy, never looked approvingly at Hitler. The nation had always been unified where it counted and had responded seamlessly during World War II.

3) Until about 1953, there were still plenty of people who knew what was what and weren't afraid to call a spade a spade. But after Eisenhower was elected and Dulles became head of the CIA, this rewritten history was ruthlessly imposed. Much of Operation Mockingbird had to do with cementing it into place. At the same time, it became unacceptable to call extremist forces in the United States "fascist." You could decry McCarthyism or the hijinks of right-wing oil millionaires, but expressing the idea that the f-word might apply to Americans was considered almost a form of libel.

At its mildest, this was a kind of deal between the right and left -- we won't call you communists if you won't call us fascists. At its worst, it was more like a threat -- of course we're not fascists, and only a dirty commie would suggest we were.

4) There have been cracks in the we-were-never-fascists myth from time to time. The explicit reliance of the John Birch Society on fascist conspiracy theories. The willingness of movement conservatives in the US to associate with outright fascists in Latin America in the 1970s and 80's. But those have never gotten any traction. The power of the myth is too strong.

But the history of the Family lays the whole thing out too clearly to ignore -- from its fascist-lite origins in 1935 to its wartime re-imagining of itself as a patriotic organization bent on bipartisan religious uplift to its maintenance of clearly fascist doctrines for its elite inner circle. I still have no hope that the MSM will ever acknowledge this, but it's time for us to start putting the real nature of the extreme right in context.

76. You spoke of the
moneychangers at the temple from the Bible, right? Jesus got pissed and knocked over their tables.

Now I don't follow any 'organized' religion since they seem to do nothing but look for ways to start wars, but I was always under the impression that the moneychangers were Jews and everyone had to change their money into shekels...nothing else was accepted. Right? They had to pay a temple tax or some kind.

Things really haven't changed much, have they?

Jews weren't allowed to have land for some stupid reason, so they went into finance...at least that's what was on the PBS show last week 'Ascent of Money.' The Medicis of Florence were Jewish.

As far as I am concerned the Jews should have been allowed to be farmers like everyone else...we'd all have dirty farmer's hands then. But I wasn't around back then.

11. Not Surprised In The Least
There are many here on DU who suspected as much, and that the DLC functioned on the wrong side of the tracks to be democrats. Would they have had influence in the WH had Hillary won, it's hard to say. What can be said id that anyone affiliated with this group needs to be watched closely for they and their mountains make for a very scary scenario. I also wonder how angry they are at Ensign given how he blew and has exposed them to so much scrutiny.

14. "Seem to end up creating bad things":
During the 1960s the Family forged relationships between the U.S. government and some of the most anti-Communist (and dictatorial) elements within Africa's postcolonial leadership. The Brazilian dictator General Costa e Silva, with Family support, was overseeing regular fellowship groups for Latin American leaders, while, in Indonesia, General Suharto (whose tally of several hundred thousand “Communists” killed marks him as one of the century's most murderous dictators) was presiding over a group of fifty Indonesian legislators. During the Reagan Administration the Family helped build friendships between the U.S. government and men such as Salvadoran general Carlos Eugenios Vides Casanova, convicted by a Florida jury of the torture of thousands, and Honduran general Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, himself an evangelical minister, who was linked to both the CIA and death squads before his own demise.

Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 12:17 PM by starroute
They were linked to the Honduran dictatorship in the 80's. Jim DeMint, who's been praising the coup, is associated with the Family. And the Honduran president before Zelaya keynoted a Family National Prayer Breakfast, I think in 2005 -- though plenty of mainstream figures have done that, so it's not proof of anything.

At any rate, it's something I'm keeping an eye on.

16. The list that needs to be booted out of our party
Here is my breakdown of the Family & DLC affiliation of Pro-FISA Senate Democrats who voted for the FISA bill and have either a DLC affiliation, a Family association, or both. Please be aware these lists are, especially in terms of Family membership/affiliation far from definitive, due to Family secrecy, so that the actual roster is likely to be higher.

Senate Democrats:

Mark Pryor: DLC, Family "Friend" - Co-chaired National Prayer Breakfast

Diane Feinstein: DLC

Ken Salazar: DLC, Family "Friend" - Co-chaired National Prayer Breakfast

Thomas Carper: DLC

Bill Nelson: DLC, Family member. Wife, Grace Nelson has served on Family/Fellowship Board of Directors

Evan Bayh: DLC, Family "friend"

Mary Landrieu: DLC

Barbara Mikulski: DLC

Max Baucus: DLC

Ben Nelson: DLC, Family member, co-chaired National Prayer Breakfast

Kent Conrad: DLC, Family member

Tim Johnson: DLC

John Rockefeller: DLC

Herbert Kohl: DLC

Senate Independent:

Joseph Lieberman: DLC, Family "Friend", Co-Chaired National Prayer Breakfast.

24. What bothers me the most about this...
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 12:41 PM by CoffeeCat
If you look at what these people do, it's pure evil. We don't need to go into a list of
their wrongdoings. However, it's evident that their true intentions have nothing to do
with the teachings of Christ or any sort of morality.

I'm very bothered by all of this, because it screams pathological intentions. These people are most
likely sociopaths and psychopaths--who are using religion as a denial mechanism. They want
the poor to suffer, and the enjoy the middle class disappearing--as they amass power and money
through greed and theft. They get off on watching democracy suffocate, while Fascism takes
hold. They love this stuff, but they need religion to rationalize it all and make their
schemes palatable--and worthy of praise and admiration.

Religion can be a force for good. However, some evil people in society, use religion to build
up thick walls of denial--around their very sinister lives.

These people are dangerous--because not only are they evil-but their brains are completely
warped. There have been studies on pedophiles, that conclude that there is no typical pedophile
profile. Pedophiles come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and have varied personalities,
occupations and personalities. There is one commonality though---a vast majority of them
are highly involved in organized religion and describe themselves as "very religious".
I'm not saying the "Family" are a bunch of pedophiles, although I wouldn't be surprised if
many were.

The point is---that pathological people often deeply deny how sick and destructive
they are--by using religion to keep the truth about themselves--from even themselves.
"I'm not a bad person, I'm religion" or "I'm only doing this because this is how Christ would
want me to act" are typical warped thought processes.

I don't doubt that these people have attained power in our country. Look at what has happened
to it in the past few decades. We've been slouching toward Fascism for many years. That doesn't
happen by accident.

People are making this happen--and it's coming from somewhere--and it's obvious that they have
slowly amassed power.

26. K&R, excellent description of what drives these people...

if they feel any guilt or remorse for what they are doing to this country, all they have to do is go to C Street and, not only will all be forgiven, but the new fascist religion will provide a working framework for screwing the populace.

Perhaps we need a parody youtube cover of that song with slightly altered lyrics with video imagery of all of the members of the "Family" shown and linked together with their power-mongering to help us popularize imagery that shows how this insidious clan works in our power structure today!

If you wanted a parody of what they are thinking about.

To think what they were thinking, to play a video of what their thoughts might be, and the place they are at.

It would probably be this one.

Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 11:21 PM by Octafish
These idolators worship money and power and do all they can to accumulate it for themselves.

What's worst is they violate the very principles Jesus espoused: Be kind to the weak and love your enemy.

By their evil towards others -- including millions of innocent children bombed and tortured for oil -- we know what they are.

They are the Anti-Christ.

The fact that Rahm Emanuel was his number one draft pick should tell us all something about where the Obama administration wants to take us.

how during the presidential campaign all the front runners and especially Obama made a point of distancing themselves from the DLC? Obama went so far as to decline an invation to address the DLC. However, DLC alumni in the administration include: Tom Vilsack Secretaru of Agriculture, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
