Texting Teen Falls Down Open Manhole on Staten Island
Source: myfoxny.com

YFOXNY.COM - One second a Staten Island teenager was walking down the street, the next second she was gone.

Alexa Longueira was walking down Victory Boulevard and getting ready to text-message when she fell into an open sewer manhole. Now the city is trying to figure out why the manhole was left open and unblocked.

Alexa suffered some cuts and scrapes but is otherwise OK.

He mother says workers told her they left the manhole open and unattended for just seconds while they went to fetch some cones from their truck....

I could understand if she were badly injured and needed to be hospitalized but as it stands, she's fine and the DEP is investigating. It's pretty much the best possible outcome but, of course, they see dollar signs.

13. That's why you should get cell phones with full keyboards for texting.
Don't have any need to look at the phone while typing. That way I can at least keep a visual on cars while typing. I know the same can be done with a T9 phone, but with those you have to look down to make sure it's guessing the right word.

36. "Don't have any need to look at the phone while typing..."
i can't even type on a full-size computer keyboard without looking at my fingers...and with my large rounded fingers, trying to type on a phone-sized keyboard, especially without looking at it, would yield entirely incoherent messages.

then again, it really doesn't matter, because i've never sent a text message, and probably won't be anytime soon.

how many of us stare at the ground as we walk? we've all tripped over a threshold, curb or similar obstruction in our path even when we are paying attention.

17. 2 things wrong here
I see three things wrong in this story First Con ED had no barricades around the open man hole, Second The teenage girl was not looking where she was going and finally her friend did not alert her to the danger of the open manhole.

I don't know about anyone else, but I always tend to watch where I'm walking, just so this sort of thing doesn't happen. Isn't that what we have eyes for?

35. At least she had a phone to call for help
I could only imagine that 911 call.

Probably something like "Um I was walking down the street texting my BBFO and the next thing I know I fell into a big whole. Can you help me please."

I am sure the 911 operator was a little perplexed and maybe chuckling under her breath.

OK, yeah, the workers shoudl have set the cones out first and THEN opened the cover. But, the question has to be asked - if she didn't notice a big hole in the ground would she have noticed the cones?
