Solution to the unrecommend crisis:
Keep 2 greatest threads pages. One counting recs and unrecs. And other just recs.
And also give the option in the control panel to choose whether you want to view recs-unrecs or just recs.

6. Personally, I like the idea of a "Hottest" Page.
As I said to Skinner in response to another post, I think that my concerns can be entirely eliminated with the addition of a "Hottest" page (a page like the Greatest Page that ranks threads by the sum of recommends and unrecommends with, perhaps, a 30 total vote minimum, and with an aggregate sum of less than +5--because threads that are +5 or higher appear on the Greatest Page). If there were a nice little icon at the top of the forum, say between Greatest and Lobby, it would address my concerns perfectly. With such a page, minority opinion OPs that generate lots of responses would still appear in an easy to access place and would get significant attention, but they would not "poison" the Greatest Page and would not project from DU's home page an opinion that the majority did not share. That addition, I think, would satisfy both camps in this particular debate.

55. Thanks. Sadly, now, I have come to another conclusion.
Even a "Hottest" page would not address the issue I raise here:

Ultimately, I think the unrec function just needs to be abolished.

10. Oh, man -
get a grip!

It's a message board. Post opinions, and learn something, Read other posts, agree or disagree, life goes on.

This "crisis" is imaginary. It's meaningless.

Life - live it. Get one. Or, in the alternative, get a grip.

If only you could take that energy and use it for something constructive, like finding a cure for cancer...............

35. I'm not seeing that at all. I didn't ruin the old system.
tavalon didn't. malaise didn't. Time for Change didn't. scarletwoman didn't. zeemike didn't. Ken Burch didn't. Mythsaje didn't. What are you talking about? Are you just generating the whining you're accusing others of or do you have a point? I've never posted a "rec this if" thread or a thread bashing Obama or the party. And I don't think that anyone who is really thinking about this and coming down against it has either.

"Crisis" was not a word used by any of us, so to turn it back on us is just shady. It's more hyperbole from your side of the argument. Whatever.

But, I guess some peoples' discussion is what others hear as "incessant whining".

I can't and won't personalize this. Crisis is in the subject of this post BTW. The way you talk about this, you act like you're associated with a group that I'm not part of? What's that all about? I can't really understand why you and several others are taking this discussion personally - we're all allowed to discuss this as individuals - right?

Do you like the new system?

If not, why not?

43. I really don't want to personalize anything but just wanted to point out
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 10:05 PM by EFerrari
that the posters I listed have also expressed discomfort with this new system and they're not a group of self-interested posters or Obama bashers or anything like that. It's not a group at all, just what I've read on the board.

Maybe there's a whole other group that you are thinking of that don't want this change that I don't know anything about. That's possible. This is DU. lol

DUer tavalon wrote out a quiet thought about why she finally decided that she didn't like this new system. If you haven't seen that thread, you might like to.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6046698

I'm sorry if I've been a pain. Maybe time for me to go wash some dishes. :)

ETA: Maybe I shouldn't have run down that list. I certainly don't speak for anyone else. But the thing is, the posters that are uncomfortable with this aren't exactly who you might think they are. Whatever. If this wasn't okay, the mods will delete it.

45. Thanks, I did participate in that thread
You even responded to a post of mine where I agreed with somebody who disagreed with you (that never happens - lol).

Aren't you glad that the equivalent of Itchy and Scratchy isn't happening on the Greatest Page of late? How many times were there alternating days of "us" versus "them" threads at the top that were contributing nothing to discussion here and only served to make DU look like a bunch of angry children fighting to those who would stop by the Greatest to see what was up with DU. I think this change promotes intelligent discussion by removing some of the animosity between different factions here.

44. The difference on the GP the past few days is all the proof I need...

It used to be 50% posts that started with:

"Rec this thread if...."

Basically, vanity.

"I want to see myself on the Greatest Page"

...and now... gone. What is on the Greatest Page now is outstanding posts containing substance on a wide variety of topics.

The fears that no threads criticizing Obama would make it to the GP turned out to be unfounded, as several critical threads are there.

The fears that no threads about/for hard progressives like Kucinich would make it ALSO turned out to be unfounded.

But the drivel is gone. The unrec feature has worked fantastically well.

...and the same 10-15 people are bitching and moaning about it in thread after thread.

40. I got a solution to the alleged "crisis" too....
it involves lots and lots of little voodoo dolls and about 10 lbs of very sharp hatpins

We write complainers' names on the dolls then we stick pins in some vulnerable spots.

When their asses start falling off or their eyeballs rot or their genitals keep catching on fire, they'll figure out what a REAL crisis is.

It's all a matter of perspective, you know...
