5 Things to Remember About Jeff Sessions

As the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions is the GOP’s point-man for the Sonia Sotomayor hearings. As you watch him rip away at her past statements and behavior in some of C-SPAN’s most riveting programming since the cap and trade vote in the House, here’s a primer on the guy doing the grilling:

1. He was involved in a scandal involving his attitude toward the Klan
His debut on the national scene was during a confirmation battle for his nomination to be the U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Alabama. The nomination was ultimately shot down by the Judiciary Committee when Sessions’ past behavior was aired. According to The Guardian, “a black former assistant U.S. Attorney in Alabama named Thomas Figures testified that, during a 1981 murder investigation involving the Ku Klux Klan, Sessions was heard by several colleagues commenting that he “used to think they were OK” until he found out some of them were “pot smokers.”"

2. He won’t disqualify you “per se” for a Supreme Court nomination if you have “gay tendencies.”
That’s right, gay and lesbian citizens out there. You know those “tendencies” that you have? Well, Jeff Sessions says that he’ll still pretend to listen to your answers in a confirmation hearing should you be nominated for a judgeship. Hooray!

3. He’s not a fan of children crying during his hearings.
During Shirley Tan’s testimony regarding the Uniting American Families Act, her child began to cry. But this ploy didn’t fool Senator Sessions. HuffPo reports: “at the sight of the weeping boy, according to a Senate staffer who was at the hearing, Sessions leaned towards one of his aides and sighed, ‘Enough with the histrionics.’”

4. He’s got a slight Joe McCarthy streak
Apparently, Sessions has a good eye for communists lurking in our national institutions. That’s why reports say that he’s referred to the NAACP as a “communist-inspired” and “pinko” organization.

1. Oh damn! I have gay tendencies. No Supreme Court for me, I guess.
Just the slightest of tendencies, mind you -- I believe that pretty much everyone does, yes, maybe even Sessions himself -- but that's enough, apparently. :eyes:

4. So he was frozen in 1962 and thawed and released in our time.
An interesting scientific experiment. I wonder who's behind it.

5. I want to know what he thinks about an entire judiciary department that was
politicized between 2001 and 2009 beyond any measure we've seen before. What did he think of the hundreds hired from Pat Robert's low-ranking university? What did he think about the fact that 87% of prosecutions of sitting officials were of democrats...during a time when democrats were out of power? What did he think of the prosecutors and attorney's general who were fired for not pursuing voter fraud even when there was none? Seigelman? What did he think of Andy Card and Gonzales sitting beside of an incapacitated Ashcroft to force approval of an illegal spying program? What did he think of Harriet Myers nomination?

The hypocrisy here MUST be exposed....these guys cheered when subpoenas were ignored, when administration officials lied, etc. Can't stand for it.

6. Too wordy. Remember one thing: He's an idiot.
Sessions was on "Face the Nation" defending Cheney's illegal concealment of a CIA program from Congress by pointing out that the CIA (oh, and our troops, too, God love 'em) were trying to protect the country after 9/11 (not such a priority BEFORE 9/11, I guess) and that made it OK, so we didn't need any special investigation even if it was illegal.

Leahy said that he didn't want a special investigation to end up blaming the lower ranks while letting the higher-ups evade blame.

CBS duly reported that the proposed special investigation "faced criticism from both parties". :eyes:
