We've got 4 threads with well over 100 recs on the Greatest Page |
|
And one of them with over 200.
Just an observation.

That's "bitterness"? I prefer to think of it as not being a doormat. YMMV.

25. If people are being ignored for being newbies, that's a "cultural" issue with this community. |
|
Not that I haven't seen it on other boards.
People who vote down a new poster without looking at post content have issues of their own. Hopefully those who make a fair judgement based on post content are in the majority if this forum is as sophisticated as it wants to believe it is.

I won't even OPEN a thread unless it's got more than 10 recs. 5 of those recs MIGHT be an attempt to "Hide Thread", which is right beside "Recommend".
I just can't take any chances.

18. But, you're thinking like a poster who has been here a long time |
|
and who feels very comfortable surfing the board, someone who has a lot of friends.
Most posters to this board aren't you. Apart from all the other stuff, it's not really about all the recs but about the reception of ideas. Ideas not doing all that well at DU today.
Maybe everyone is just still riled up. The anthill will go back to normal but, this pre-emptive anonymous disapproval isn't going to keep DU on the cutting edge of anything but approval seeking.

24. It's nice to see that we agree about some things. |
|
Each of those threads (except for the one about the unrec function, itself) has about 50 responses, very little in the way of discussion, and hardly any sub-threads (responses to responses). It's a nice, happy, liberal news feed. Not what you expect to find on a "discussion board," but it's O.K. for what it is.

30. That was Skinner's intent - consensus |
|
We have thousands of posters - and less that a hundred of them with a similar opinion could have made a thread rise to the top of the Greatest. And those who disagreed had nothing to say about it.
I feel it's more representative now. Although others will disagree with that.

31. People more quickly unite against something than for something. |
|
And they often do it without their frontal lobes.
That's a weakness of this new system. It's great to make everyone feel like they have a real vote. No so great when perfectly fine OPs are just mindlessly voted down before anyone can even read them.
You're voting out complexity, diversity and minority, and anonymously, too, so no one even has to write out a response.
That's not progressive discussion. That's something else.

33. I agree that Skinner said, outright, that he wanted to keep divisive topics off the GP. |
|
What I have seen is that divisive topics still make it, but the OP has to be written by someone who holds the majority view of active posters. That's certainly the case for the highly-ranked unrec thread. That's a very divisive topic, obviously. That thread's OP also espouses the majority view (we think). Equally busy OPs that espouse the minority view do not make it.
So, it doesn't keep divisive OPs off, per se, but it does allow greater exposure for majority opinion OPs on divisive topics.
Or, so it seems to me. I am not sure I would call that "representative," per se.
