At the risk of being in violation of the rules by calling out DU'ers...
Hey Skinner! Hey EarlG! Hey Elad!

Why don't you jump in and put this issue to rest by telling the naysayers that Unrec is here to stay, and ala Cronkite, add "And That's The Way It Is..."?

Chisel it in stone already. Put this silly discussion to bed. Would that we could go back to reading and responding to posters whose posts are meant to inspire discussion and NOT merely to make it to the Greatest Page.

If I'd change anything, I'd change the criteria for promoting a post to the Greatest Page. How about raising the minimum number of posts for a thread to get promoted to, say, 50, and give unrecs 3/5ths of a vote. After 50 recs, a post should STAY on the Greatest Page, but the number of negative posts should also be displayed, after adjusting them to allow for the 3/5ths rule.

AND, if having their OP on the Greatest Page is THAT important to certain DU'ers, upon promotion to the Greatest Page, remove the OP from the forum it originated in.

6. It's being discussed ad nauseum. Nothing would stop people from discussing it after being
informed that it wasn't going away. Those of us who support it just wouldn't feel the need to weigh in.

It was the decision of the Big Three to institute it in the first place, and those who keep posting about things like taking up petitions to get it changed should be seen as insulting their judgment.

3. Wow. 3/5ths of a vote. That's, like, so original!
You do know, don't you, that you can email the Admins directly about your concerns?

9. I don't have concerns, just opinions. Same as you. n/t
I could have picked any number or ratio. Should 3/5ths be forbidden as a ratio because of it's historical connotations? How silly is that?

16. Hey, in Orwellian times, "3/5ths of a person" means whatever "the majority' says it means.
That's what the Memory Hole is for. Don't try to tell me there is some cultural or historic signifigance attached to those words. Gimmeabreak. :eyes:

7. Three fifths of a vote? Like.... slavery?
http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~ras2777/amgov/slavery2.html

...Not wanting to put the word "slave" in the Constitution, the delegates agreed the Constitution would state that population would be determined by counting the number of "free Persons . . . plus three-fifths of all other Persons . . ." Of course, if one is an "other person" rather than a free person, obviously the "other person" must be "not free"; in other words, a slave.

I like UNREC. Let's just leave it as it is. It's plain a lot of thought went into the implementation, and the whiners will get over it. Or maybe they'll start writing better posts.

Already the Greatest Page is looking pretty great. No more Five Vote Bullshit Posts!

8. It's amazing just how stupid this has become.
The only way this could have been worse, would have been to rename the Rec "Obama" and the Unrec "Hillary" so that we could relive the idiocy that was the primary race here.

It's the Greatest Page, people. As useful as it may be, nobody is going to die because of it.

11. could we please have a third button?
I could live with posts having an Obama, Hillary and Kucinich button - but dismissing us as hillary supporters is insulting.

14. a simpler solution is attach a Kick to the UnReck so folks have to consider before Nuking
and that UnRecked thread gets a chance to breathe, which is appropriate if it has been endorsed by Recs.

  Double Plus Good

Well "naysayers" like me understand this is how it is -- and part of that is the unfortunate display of assholishness that the announcement immediately elicited.

As if the belligerent and bullies need any more excuses......................

20. Jeezus Fukking Kryste... Talk about Knee Jerk and the propensity for some to live by it...
If I'd used 4/19ths, would anyone have jumped the shark and used a phrase like "three fifths... like slavery"?

I'll stand by my post.

It should be reiterated by Skinner, EarlG, or Elad (or all three) that DU posts can be both rec'd and unrec'd.

This post could be held up as a reason why. I don't mind being unrec'd, and YOU'LL NEVER HEAR ME WHINE ABOUT IT.

In fact, unless I post a story about putting myself between a cop and an innocent person at great risk to my own personal safety, or kicking a homophobic body-builder's ass as he was picking on a gay man or woman, or climbing a 100 foot pine tree to save a baby squirrel that had wandered too far on a weak limb, I'd expect to have ALL my posts unrec'd, such is my standing at DU. Does that stop me from posting? Um, uh uh.

I ain't asceart of being unpopular, any more than I'm asceart of not being so poopular as to have my posts promoted just because I sign my name to them. For lots of posts, it's nothing more than the name of the poster that gets them to the Greatest Page.

But, in the interest of fairness, I'll change my stated criteria for getting to the Greatest Page: Make it 16/76ths of a vote for unrecs.

What have you seen (or not seen) on the Greatest page that makes you think the Unrec feature is wreaking havoc?

21. I guarantee you it would stir up the hornets nest even more - it'd be Godwin's Law on steroids.
Every other posted thread would be "FASCISM DESCENDS ON DU!/GOODBYE FOREVER DU THE SUPPRESSION IS TOO MUCH!/THE ADMINS - SECRETLY IN THE HITLER YOUTH?!?!?/SKINNER IS THE ULTIMATE DEEP COVER FREEPER TROLL!!!!!11"/FILL-IN-YOUR-OWN-HYPERBOLIC-THREAD-TITLE HERE....

The melodrama routines would make Susan Lucci look like a piker.

22. My intent was to prove a point, and I believe I did so in spades.
Here's a post that went negative in the first few minutes, yet people responded to it.

Unrec = stifling discussion? I think not. The Greatest Page? Been there, done that.

Sorry for the hyberbole, but sometimes it's necessary if you want to make the point.

Unrec should stay.
