A suggestion to make recs and unrecs more useful and harder to corrupt |
|
Instead of consolidating the recs and unrecs such that they may cancel out to less than zero, how about keeping the Yay and Nay scores separate? In other words, if I and ten others recommend a thread and 12 people un-recommend that thread, the score shows as Rec: +11 & Un-Rec: -12 instead of <0. The latter gives no clue as to the number of voters that took place - in my opinion, the more voters, the more valid the vote.
A thread that has just as many recs as unrecs may have been Freeped, but you can still see how many people recommended it. Many conflicting recs and unrecs may simply mean the subject is contentious rather than not worth the bother of checking out.

"Perpetrator"? It really isn't a crime. Really.
Anyhoo, why do you think a Kick would deter Unrecs? It sounds like you're assuming an Unrec is some form of punishment or retaliation rather than simple disagreement with the content. Is the former how you would use it?

3. That's cruel. It's enough, I think, for a person to know that their post is not regarded by the |
|
community as "Greatest." Do you think people will feel better if they realize several hundred people think their sillyass vanity post sucks?
Really, the people who are upset about this UNREC change are fragile enough as it is, apparently. The pouting and crying really needs to cease. No longer will six people (or one person with five sockpuppets) be able to paper the Greatest Page with horseshit. That's a good thing.
Check out the Greatest Page. It's no longer a place for asinine and self absorbed nonsense. There's news and topics worth discussing on it. Oh, happy day!

12. And I suppose that before there was so much of it that |
|
You just could not find anything interesting. I have never seen TGP or any otter page so full of crap that I could not find something interesting in the 8 years I have been here. So it is a solution to a problem that did not exist...unless you can show me just what you object to as crap and point to some time that it happened...perhaps I was away at the time.

13. Now you're over the top |
|
You know, when you overstate your case like that, you make the case for the poster you're criticizing. Since the Greatest Page wasn't even implemented until Feb '05 (just 4 1/2 years ago), your claim is ridiculous on it's face. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3092765

Missed that misselling.... It should have read TGP or other pages...I was referring to DU in general...all pages not just TGP And that includes the lounge which is known for it's unorthodox posts. So your claim of ridiculousness is ridiculous.

9. Rec/Unrec denies us information. So I totally agree with your suggestion. |
|
I would like to see how many Recs there are. Unrec denies me that information. It reminds me of the Diebold voting machines that began counting backwards in Ohio. If you can simply erase peoples' votes, without a trace that they voted, then you are denied essential information, not just how they voted but THAT they voted.
Recs should stay up, so we can see how many Recs there are. If there are equal or more Unrecs, so be it. Some folks have a burr under their saddle on the issue. That's good to know, too. But an Unrec should not be able to cancel out a Rec.
Also, an Unrec is much too easy to do, and favors the "hit and run" poster--brief, negative, propagandistic and overwhelmingly rightwing posts--from posters whose only contribution is a rightwing "talking point," and who provide no facts, information, background or analysis, and run away when someone else DOES provide facts, information, background or analysis and wants to discuss the matter. I've seen this time and again. I think Recs are more thoughtful, and Unrecs are not. Unrecs are kneejerk--merely trying to prevent a topic from making the "Greatest Page." The impulse of an Unrec is to shut down discussion (just as "hit and run" posters intend), whereas a Rec has the opposite intention--to encourage discussion. Recs should therefore be recorded and visible, and should not be erasable with an Unrec.
