my youngest daughter (19) arrived home today from a trip to Micronesia; on the way home she stopped for a couple of days in Hawaii.
Yesterday, while in the water, she received 12 stings from a couple of Portugese Man-of-Wars; not simple stings, but 12 "threads" of many, many stings.
She is feeling fine today, but she said it hurt like hell for about 5-6 hours. Does anyone know if these "threads" will leave any residual scarring?
Heck of a way to get some unique tattooing on her arms, stomach, and legs. :scared:
Sorry to intrude on the Rec/Unrec wars, but I thought perhaps someone here might know. :)

Your mileage may vary though,

There are different types of these things. The ones I ran into were the purple I think they are called man o war. This was in the florida keys. Different types might yield different results.

4. So sorry... Yikes! My cousin and I were stung by a red jellyfish while swimming as kids... |

She got it worse than I did, had tentacles stuck to her, but there was no scarring. It just hurt like hell at the time. I still remember how terribly that hurt, so can't imagine how my cousin felt, let alone your poor daughter. My sincere sympathies.
I also remember seeing the man-of-Wars washed up on the beach. We knew to give them a wide berth. Can't even imagine encountering one in the water... :scared:
On edit: To be clear, we encountered the jellyfish off Southampton, LI, while the Portuguese Man-of-Wars were in Florida. :hi:

5. Couldnt agree more with the pain |
|
Dont think anything has hurt that bad since. I think i might have actually ran on water trying to get out of them. Thankfully I was very close to the shore.

6. We were in the water just off of the long dock... |
|
I think that's the only time that we went in the water. My cousin was a crier as a kid, but I couldn't figure out why she was screaming, but then I felt it, too. It was really a very small jellyfish, light red in color, but it sure packed a wallop! You have my sympathies, too, my friend. I can't imagine it being more painful, but yours must have been... x(
