Arizona takes giant steps backward

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-13-arizona-guns_N.htm

Arizona to permit handguns in bars

Arizonans with concealed weapons permits will be allowed to take a handgun into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jan Brewer.
The measure, backed by the National Rifle Association, will require bar and restaurant owners who want to ban weapons on the premises to post a no-guns sign next to the business' liquor license.

Drinking while carrying a weapon would be illegal.

Before a compromise reached late in the Legislature's regular session, the measure pitted powerful groups representing gun and bar owners against each other.

Arizona Governor Approves Abortion Constraints

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday set a new course from her Democratic predecessor on the issue of abortion, signing a measure imposing new mandates and restrictions.

One of the bill's provisions is a requirement that those who visit an abortion provider wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. The visit would have to include disclosures by doctors in person about the procedure, risks and alternatives, and the fetus' probable characteristics.

Also, an existing law on parental approval for minors seeking to end pregnancies would be toughened. In addition, pharmacists and other health care providers will be able to refuse to hand out emergency contraception on moral or religious grounds.

a few more of the giant steps backward Ariz. will look like Afghanistan

what is it? they have watched too many Hollywood cowboy movies (guns) listened to too many religiously insane preachers (abortion) ??

:sarcasm:

to be fair, half the blame lies with Napolitano. She didn't HAVE to go and leave us with Brewer.

Tansy Gold, who is not likely to ever set foot in a bar in Arizona again but then she hasn't been in one in probably a year or so anyway so it's no great loss to the bar owners.

That is why the Second Amendment, the Electoral College, and many other things will never be repealed even if a majority of the people want to.

As it was under the previous law, and has been for a long time.

they need merely post a sign indicating this next to the liquor license.

12. Would you refuse a drink to a guy with a gun?
The point of carrying around a gun is to have more power at your disposal, including the power to get a drink when you want one.

14. Is that a serious question? Um, yes, if the sign says no, then you don't get a drink.
If what you are asking is if someone pointed a gun at me and ordered me to get them a drink, would I do it, of course.

The kind of incident you depict would be classified as a "robbery". You seem to have a jaundiced view of people who have passed the state's qualifications for a concealed-weapons permit.

44. This sub-thread reminds me of a cowboy joke
A cowboy went into a saloon to quench his thirst.

A big, tough-looking man wearing a black hat put an open bottle of whisky on the bar. He pulled out his gun, pointed it at the cowboy, and said "I want you to take a drink of this whisky, stranger!"

The cowboy complied.

He gagged as he swallowed the rotgut, and said to the man with the gun "That's the worst goddamn whisky I've ever tasted!"

The man in the black hat lowered his gun, and handed it to the cowboy and said "Here, point the gun at me. I want a drink!"

Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 12:21 PM by DesertRat
She was Sec. of State who succeeded Gov. Janet Napolitano when President Obama tapped her for his cabinet.

These kinds of bills have routinely been passed and vetoed by Napolitano over the years. I do blame the president and Secy. Napolitano who knew of the majority right wing legislature here.

Governor Brewer also has the distinction of being the only U.S. governor who did not go to college.

Hyperbole much?

Most states in the country allow for concealed carry in establishments that serve alcohol. It's simply a non-issue. People who go to the trouble of getting a concealed carry permit aren't suddenly going to go crazy at the sight of a beer and start shooting the place up.

I Know, I live in Lake Havasu City Arizona.

80% of the voters here voted for Bush twice.
The Tea Bag party downtown was one of the biggest in
the USA. Our main street was overflowing with
Obama haters. It was unbelievable!

Arizona is truly a primitive backward oasis for
the right wing Luddites and Cretin's.

The gun carrying crazies are everywhere here.

Arizona is very backwards and proud of it!

Quick... hide under the bed!

If AZ is taking a step backwards,I guess that means GA, LA, MI, MS, MO, NM, ND, SD, TX and WI are more advanced and/or progressive than the 38 states that do allow CCW wherever alcohol is consumed or sold (2 states do not allow any CCW)?

Of those 10, roughly half outright prohibit the practice, and the other half allow it with certain restrictions.

People do go to bars as designated drivers, and there are many people who go out socializing with people but don't drink because of health reasons or personal issues.

31. I've been known to go to bars
because kids aren't supposed to be there. Not for the alcohol, but for a place to get together with adults free of kids.

I like kids. I had 2 of my own. I have a grandson I go to "family" places with.

I'm also a teacher, and work all day long with everyone else's kids. There are times when I just want to be somewhere kids aren't.

Somehow, I don't think bars and restaurants are going to ask every person they serve if they are "carrying."

Not that asking would necessarily get them a truthful answer, lol.

Alcohol and guns are just a really bad combination, no matter which way you look at it.

And there was a companion piece of legislation that was pulled (to allow this one to pass) and that will probably be re-introduced next year (and pass) that would allow ANYONE to carry a concealed weapon anywhere in AZ.

Or in the halls of congress. What's good for the geese is good for the gander, I say. If these gun loving politicians want everyone armed to the teeth because it makes things so much safer, then I should be able to carry a gun into any public building I want to. I could just as easily be shot in congress -- as Tom DeLay almost was once -- so I need to be able to defend myself.
