I've been admiring Judge Sotomayor . . . I like her even more today |
|
The judge strikes me as a very thoughtful person who has thought deeply about the issues of law that she's been tasked with adjudicating and has come up with some rather insightful conclusions and opinions about the role of judges at every level.
What's most interesting to me is her ability to explain the state and process of law in a profoundly natural and understandable manner. With the exception of the bluntness and humanity demonstrated by Justice Ginsburg, and the thoughtfulness and wisdom demonstrated by Justice Souter, it appears that Judge Sotomayor will most closely represent the down to earth approach to law on the Court that Justice Thurgood Marshall gifted the nation with during his term.
Despite the qualities demonstrated by the two justices I mentioned, they nonetheless, tend to present the process of law as an exclusive club of interests in which considerations for the protection of the Constitution seem to sometimes overshadow the needs and concerns of the individual appellants and those affected by their decisions. That's not to say that their decisions reflect that impression, but there hasn't been a strong sense that these folks are working in our individual interests as they translate the prerogatives and rights embedded in the documents (Bill of Rights, etc.) they seek to adhere to.
With the ascension of Judge Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, I think Americans will come to recognize her as the Justice they can most identify with because of her natural ability to translate her appreciation of humanity; wrought from the deep and thoughtful understanding of our society, and her appreciation of our many diverse and disparate relationships with the law that she's pledged to uphold.

1. I was kind of lukewarm about her when Obama first made the nomination.... |
|
...mainly because of the Bush appointments and her Catholic background. I had some fears ~~ pretty big ones ~~ about what she would do with women's reproductive rights.
However, the more I see and hear ~~ and I have been glued to these hearings ~~ the more I am impressed.
I am 100% in support of her...she is wonderful and I am fully impressed!
