Gavin Newsom has abandoned us
Gavin Newsom is off and running for governor. He's holding town hall meetings everywhere but San Francisco. All the while, he assumes that we will vote for him even though he's leaving the city with a huge budget problem, a violent crime problem and general neglect. For all you progressives who think he's the greatest thing since Howard Dean, think again. He is a one-trick pony who thinks he can ride marriage equity all the way to the Democratic nonimation while ignoring everything else. Don't believe his hype.

1. I doubt very much that he could carry the state in a gubernatorial election
A lot of people outside the city really don't care for him.

3. Uh...
a lot of people INSIDE the City don't care for him, either! :D

The old Burton Machine appear to be backing him -- they will give him $$$ and their clout. Still, I hope he's made toast. And quickly.

2. He has been running for Governor since he first ran for Mayor.
I cannot stand Newsom -- he has done little to nothing for our town. :( It was all -- including the marriage equality event intended to raise his exposure -- about furthering his career. This Democrat will not be voting for him for Governor. I've had enough of him. :puke:

6. the marriage equality event
was also a gross violation of seperation of powers. just because i support marriage equality, doesn't mean i support blatantly unconstitutional grandstanding by the executive branch

7. He lost me when he started beating up on homeless people.
But apparently, that's what my neighbors voted him in to do.

13. I think about --
Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 02:58 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
the influx of the new Yuppies that have hit SF since the dotcom boom -- they are about the $$$ and the trendy bars and luxury condos, and not necessarily about what SF has traditionally been about. A friend of mine started calling SF "Newsomville" because so much of the City's poulation has started to look (and act) exactly like him.

It is a change that has NOT been good for the City. :(

The City's homeless situation has needed addressing for a very long time. Newsom's approach was more punitive and utterly lacked the imagination needed to truly make a dent in the problem.

14. I miss Willie Brown. Even if he did run the place like his personal fiefdom,
at least at some level he did care about the people who live here.

5. Great, let's welcome the next Republican governor of CA!
Damn, why couldn't Villaraigosa have run? Not that I like him or anything but at least we could have been assured of a Democratic win.

16. Villaraigosa is too busy tending his own going-bankrupt city down here!
though if he can somehow hobble the municipality through -- itself a "victory" in these times -- he may his eye on DiFi's Senate seat...

10. Yes, but...
There is a conflict between the Chonicle and the Examiner as to whether violent crime has gone down overall. I think more people are just surviving their attacks.

11. If only he would resign
The problem is that he is keeping his title while choosing to do nothing, the worst possible situation for us.
