17-Year-Old Girl To Spend Year In Jail

NEW YORK -- A New York City teenager has admitted that she failed to let a kitten out of an oven after a friend put the animal inside and left it to roast to death.

After pleading guilty to charges of animal cruelty and attempted burglary on Wednesday, 17-year-old Cheyenne Cherry confronted a row of animal activists outside the courtroom. Cherry stuck out her tongue and told the activists that the kitten named Tiger Lily was "dead."

Authorities said Cherry and a 14-year-old friend ransacked a Bronx apartment before putting the cat in the oven, where it cried and scratched before dying.

The 14-year-old was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and burglary in the May 6 incident.

Cherry will serve a year in jail under a plea bargain.

on edit: I just read the Daily News account. That girl is off the rails, at age 17. I feel badly for her, because she's so obviously been failed by whomever gave birth to and raised her. That's not her fault, but her actions speak for themselves.

Cherry is not new to animal crimes.

She was busted last year for using a BB gun to dog-nap a teacup Yorkie with her boyfriend. She was also arrested for robbing a man of his iPod at gunpoint.

One day she'll try to rob another person who is armed this time, and that will be her last day.

13. So true. People who torture or kill animals for "amusement" often end

up committing crimes against young children and later to adults. My father worked at a State prison where a female inmate had done to her own baby what that teen had done to the kitten-with the same results. At least some law enforcement officials in many States already know this and take it very seriously. Hell, killing any living thing in such an agonizing and heartless manner is unforgivable, no matter what species it is!

11. Criminally insane

She needs a stint in a locked down psych ward and some serious treatment for her mental health issues. If she doesn't get treatment the next victim could be human. Then everyone will just sigh as she faces death penalty charges and say they saw it coming.

When we have good science that tells us about mental illness and how people who start with torturing animals end up, why are they not treated accordingly? Frustrating. This creature shouldn't be turned back out on society until her problems are addressed. And just wearing an orange jump suite for a year isn't going to do it.
