Jury Duty - waiting outside the courtroom
for jury selection.

The woman next to me is reading O'Reilly book. " A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity".

Should be an interesting day.

1. you should lean over and say
"yeah, I find reading comedy makes the time go faster, too."

14. I knew I'd get some fun
perspective from you guys. The woman tells me she's been on two juries before today. Hard to believe. Bet she wasn't carrying the book. Then again, this is OC, so maybe.

2. Remember to go in and say, "If he ISN'T a white male, he's OBVIOUSLY guilty."
You should be out of there in a few minutes. The woman next to you is a step ahead of you. She brought EVIDENCE that she's a bigot. You could compliment her on her brilliant strategy to get out of jury duty. Nobody who would be in possession of an O'Reilly book would qualify as an impartial juror.

11. I love it!
Either the woman's a complete idiot or she's got a clever sense of humor.

13. The only thing better would be a book by the Coulterbeast
I vote for clever. Just remember your lines - "If he's a black guy or one of them illegal im-grants, he's GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY!"

We're both on the jury. See my post #19.

19. With book in hand,
she was one of the last to be called to the jury box for questioning. I had been in the first group called up in the am, so I hadn't seen her again (after initially sitting next to her outside the courtroom) until she was actually selected. :wtf: And get this, she was assigned the seat next to mine. Weird, and creepy.

You know I am going to have to say something to her about the book over the next few weeks.

3. I recently served
I was interviewed for the selection process and I did mention to all lawyers and judges present that the entire GW Bush White House should be tried for treason and crimes against humanity.

Still got picked....?

15. I'm torn between saying something,
actually anything, that might get me out of this trial, and doing the right thing. I should probably at least try to be willing to serve. But I was thinking about mentioning my feminist ways. That would probably do the trick.

OTOH, it might backfire like it did for you.

24. I think you have a duty to go in there and make sure this
asshole doesn't commit injustice. Admit it. That's what's really bothering you. It's too late.

I wouldn't reveal my cards yet. Let it play out. Then slay them with the hammer of justice. LOL

26. It was during the Repug nat. conv. and NWA big wigs came on the plane and said...
We will have some major people that can cause some major issues for us if everything doesnt go smoothly" and you have to understand that I am the most laid back someone you will ever meet .. so I go "oh great... who" and they said "Bill O'Reilly and about 3 Faux news execs" lol
Ok I just laughed out loud lol and they looked at me like I was crazy.... I said "oh bring them on" lol
Now I have also had Nancy Palosi (spelling) and Al Gore on some of my flights... so I am used to having big people on my planes.. now I was polite to him... but I think he new that I wasnt a fan ;)

5. There must be a better way to select a jury

It is so much from the dark ages IMO.

The potential jury wait time, the lawyer time wasted and on and on.

I was a Jury Consultant for two years and the lawyer I worked for wanted to hire me full time.

No way!

17. It is amazing how many people there
are here. I had no idea. All the other times I've gotten a jury summons, it was to be on call for a week. And I never got called.

This is the first time I've actually ever had to come in. And the I'm being considered for a trial that will run through July 30. A bit long, if you ask me.

10. Plaintiff's attorney in a civil trial would never allow someone reading O'Reilly
on their jury and any defense lawyer in a criminal trial with half a brain would never permit it either. They want people who are open-minded. O'Reilly fans are rigid authoritarian types.

12. Suggest that she "stand up for her rights" like this guy...
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2278219/posts

The Price of Liberty is...Hot Dog Gruel?

As you readers may recall from earlier postings, I had jury duty yesterday for King County Superior Court. You may also recall that back in January I emailed them, in good faith, a list of principles (you know, those freedoms us libertarian “terrorists” advocate for, despite government objections) I held that I thought would disqualify me from jury duty. Other than an acknowledgment of receipt of my objections, no substantive action on them was taken by the Court.

...snip...

Before I continue, I should digress for a moment and talk about my experience with the courthouse security folks with regards to my concealed pistol. I found some instructions on an Internet message board relating instructions for checking your firearms and noting that the security folks were professional.

When the judge told us all to raise our right hand and started to recite the oath, I yelled out “No” loud enough to be heard over the judge's public address system.

When challenged to explain myself, I did the best I could to explain my concerns about swearing an oath I knew that I couldn't keep due to concerns of possible self-incrimination. Judge Hayden, of course, won't tolerate anyone with enough gall to stand up for their rights, so he held me in contempt of court for refusing to take the oath. So, off to jail I went. But before I go to jail, some light background on the right to avoid self-incrimination, with my thanks to David Codrea.

...snip...

All in all, jail wasn't much different from the Army. In some ways it was far easier, in others it was harder or worse. The worst thing was not being able to get the phones to work, so I couldn't call for an attorney, or call to let anyone know that I was in jail. I was being held without bail, so that wasn't an issue, but Alan was expecting me to work that night.

The second worse thing was that there was no clock, so there was no way to track time, other than stealing glances at a guard's wristwatch as they moved you from place to place.

By the time dinner came around, I hadn't eaten since breakfast, and had been up for about 34 hours. When the trustees finally arrived with dinner, I was quite hungry, though I did think I would be getting released any time now. What passed for food was a watery gruel with two hot dogs floating in it, a small pile of iceberg lettuce chunks, and chocolate pudding stretched to the point of absurdity. Is it still pudding when you can drink it almost as easily as chocolate milk?

and on, and on, and on...
